Metrolist Launches New Green Fields to Real Estate Listings

Metrolist Denver announced?on March 7?the enhancement of their real estate listings database to include searchable energy ?green fields?. The online Multiple Listing Service (MLS), which is managed in the Denver Metro area by Metrolist, has been enhanced to give Realtors? the ability to include energy efficiency green fields like insulation, solar, and Energy Star appliances, in their home listings. It provides a tool for Realtors? to search for homes that are a better fit for their client, and increase the marketability of homes that are for sale.

The Governor?s Energy Office (GEO) contracted with Metrolist to create the green fields in their database using funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). Metrolist is the largest online MLS covering 40% of the state. With today?s announcement, Colorado now has 90% of the homes covered by a green MLS.?

?We are proud to partner with Metrolist,? says TJ Deora, director of the Governor?s Energy Office.? ?Their adoption of ?green fields? will help us determine if and how energy performance might soon be reflected in property values, which in turn should unlock traditional sources of low-cost financing for energy efficiency investment in homes.?

Dear Erica,

I wanted to know what I can do to obtain a real credit card. My credit rating really stinks, and it?s embarrassing. It?s in the low 400s, and I don?t qualify for anything. To make matters worse I?m receiving unemployment, but actively seeking employment. What can I do? I cannot at this point pay any of my past debts, so I?m really stuck. I know I got myself in this mess and want to take responsibility for it. Thanks for your time and help.

Hi Michael,

I?m not going to gloss over this ? your credit does smell pretty bad. A FICO score in the low 400s is barely above the 300 start point. That could mean one of two things: You have not yet become a responsible and adroit borrower, or you have borrowed money but failed to pay it back as promised. Because you have some debt to contend with now, those low scores are a result of the latter situation.

Squelch your shame, though. You?re one of millions of Americans who have made mistakes with credit cards. It?s easy to get into overwhelming debt, and, once you do, it?s hard to get out of it. And, as you?ve already learned, when you owe too much and don?t make the payments as you should, your credit rating suffers.

Here?s how to dig yourself out of this mess and get your finances and credit scores moving in the right direction:

1. Concentrate on getting a job. Ignore your score right now. The most important thing you need to do is to start bringing home a paycheck. I know that securing a job can be tough right now, but keep looking and eventually it will happen. You must earn an income, not just to pay your way in life, but to send money to your creditors. As your balances decrease, your credit rating will rise.

2. Obtain a secured credit card. Right now, you don?t deserve an unsecured account. I don?t write that to be cruel, but because unsecured credit cards are granted based on your current income and previous credit prowess. You have neither. Without them, the credit card issuer takes a mighty big risk in extending you credit, since it has no way of knowing that you can and will pay them back. However, a secured credit card is far less risky. The lender collects a cash deposit from you and holds it as collateral while also offering you a credit line. For this reason, secured cards are fairly easy to get.

3. Don?t make the same mistake twice. As I said, almost every cardholder falters some point. The key is to not let it happen again. You know how bad it feels to acquire huge balances and to be out of a job. So go ahead and use the secured credit card, but only for small, affordable items and services. Never carry over a balance, and always pay on time. As you are acutely aware, credit cards are not to be used for those times when you?ve run out of funds. Pretend the plastic doesn?t exist. If you come up short, suffer through it by eating rice and beans until your next paycheck arrives.

These three steps will lead you to a better place. Once you?ve cleared up the old debt and have established a positive payment pattern with the new card, your FICO score will smell a lot prettier than it does at this moment. When it is positively perfumey ? around 700 or so ? you can go for another credit card that offers a sweet rewards program.

Integrative medicine classes help breast cancer survivors recover ...

Yoga, qigong and other forms of healing complement standard care at UCSF?s Osher Center.

Breast cancer survivor Helen Robillard closes her eyes as she gently rotates her arms clockwise. Her movements are measured and deliberate; her breathing slow and purposeful.

She studies qigong (pronounced ?chee-gung?), an ancient Chinese practice of aligning breath, movement and awareness for healing and exercise, including through this class at the UC San Francisco Osher Center for Integrative Medicine.

?It?s a very relaxing class, so you really learn to slow down,? Robillard says during a break. ?It allows me to focus on my movements, where my hands are, where my feet are and it?s stress reduction.?

Diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2009, Robillard added qigong and other integrative medicine classes at Osher to the standard recovery regimen after several rounds of chemotherapy sapped her strength.

?I?m building little muscles in my legs that help in my balance,? she says. ?I can close my eyes at points and be off somewhere else. I can focus and be aware of my movements. It adds to my awareness of how I can relax when I?m stressed.?

That focus and relaxation are key aspects of integrative medicine.

?This kind of program allows you to exercise in a comfortable, soft, not strenuous way, and will allow almost anybody to participate,? said Joseph Acquah, O.M.D., a licensed acupuncturist at the Osher Center. ?It?s very soft; it?s gentle. It?s calming. You get to use your mind and body at the same time and there?s a focus which is always good for health.?

Emergence of integrative medicine

The term ?integrative medicine? didn?t exactly roll off people?s tongues when UCSF established the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine in 1997. UCSF Chancellor emeritus Haile Debas, M.D., then dean of the UCSF School of Medicine, with support from the Bernard Osher Foundation created a center that would test the effectiveness of complementary medicine through research, as well incorporate the best of these strategies into professional education and patient care.

?Integrative medicine combines conventional medicine with evidence-based practices from other healing traditions, including meditation, acupuncture and optimal nutrition,? said Margaret Chesney, Ph.D., director of the Osher Center. ?Integrative medicine practitioners work in partnership with patients to encourage personalized care plans and lifestyle changes to promote health.?

UCSF?s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine combines conventional medicine with evidence-based practices from other healing traditions, including meditation, yoga, tai chi and qigong. This approach has become a popular way for cancer survivors and others who are recovering from debilitating illnesses to regain strength and balance after chemotherapy and surgery. Others benefit from stress-reduction programs like laughter yoga. See slideshow.

Donald Abrams, M.D., a UCSF oncologist, has been providing integrative medicine consultation to people living with cancer at the Osher Center since 2004.

?Integrative medicine can reduce significant burden on our health care system,? he said. ?And perhaps if we focus more on integrative interventions, prevention and wellness, we may be able to fix our health care system.?

Integrative medicine takes a ?patient-centered? approach, meaning health care providers personalize care based on the patient?s physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences. Their goal is to integrate many different approaches to treatment and prevention, increasing the options available to medical professionals ? and to patients.

?At the Osher Center, integrative oncologists work with the UCSF cancer center oncologists and the cancer patient to design an integrative approach that will combine the best state-of-the-art cancer care with complementary approaches such as acupuncture for comprehensive patient-centered care,? Chesney said.

Patients at the Osher Center say the approach is working.

?There?s a lot of trauma associated with cancer and it was important for me to find a place where I felt supported,? said Diane McCarney, another qigong participant who is both diabetic and a breast cancer survivor. ?I found in a very short amount of time, just going to those gentle, easy classes, I was able to get much stronger and quicker, and I started to feel better once I started moving again.?

?People need to start thinking differently about health and this is the way to do it,? added Robillard. ?It?s hard to put on your gym clothes and go to a class. But once you do it, it?s energizing and the support you get from other people is great. You know you?re not alone. It energizes me and makes me feel normal again rather than like a sick person. I would definitely recommend it.?

As patients catch on, Abrams is hopeful integrative medicine becomes a key component in treating cancer patients.

?I hope people become aware that integrative medicine is here to stay,? Abrams said. ?It?s shown to be successful in treating some of the more difficult conditions that are plaguing people.?

Got to give recognition to Dante he had a great idea that would boost the fun factor of this RP. Dante proposed an idea to me to give each character their own individual edge in combat. I wanted to be careful not to redo the dice system because its already pretty solid and I would hate to see it fall apart with a few alterations but at the same time I dont want this fighting to be something bland and boring either so I thought of a way to bypass altering the dice system yet providing a chance to show off your uniqueness.

I decided that everyone who has an eniknight will have a battle card (which will be included in your profile) that is assigned specifically to you. What this card does is bend the rules of combat a little bit, in your favor providing certain circumstances are met like rolling a critical attack.

The stories of the little people was originally conceived in the book series "The Borrowers" about a group of tiny people who would "Borrow" small things from people that they need. 50 years after the novel was written, Director Hayao Miyazaki decided to do his take on this story. The story is about a young boy with medical problems named Shawn (David Henrie) being sent to his moms childhood house where she was told stories of small people who lived under the floor. He sees a strange creature when he is outside when he first arrives and thinks it looks like a little person. This creature ends up actually being a little person, a 14 year old girl named Arriety (Bridgit Mendler) who lives with her two parents (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) who are borrowers who are small people who "Borrow things such as soap, cookies, and other small things that humans don't need when they disappear. Shawn ends up seeing Arriety on her first night of "Borrowing" and his curiosity was picked very far when she drops sugar in his room and he drops it off in the hole near her house. Arriety questioning this is told not to take the sugar because her father thinks its a trap but she sneaks out and ends up becoming friends with Shawn. Like many of Ghiblis movies as I said before, usually get heavily Disney associated actors such as David Henrie from Wizards of Waverly Place and Moises Arias who was on Hannah Montana. But this movie also like Ghiblis other movies get moderately big actors or much older actors, such as in this film they got Carol Burnett, and Amy Poelher and Will Arnett. All of them do regular great jobs and one actor I think does the best job overall is surprisingly David Henrie as Shawn. He has such an innocent and monotone voice that it is impossible not to feel sorry for him when you find out about what is wrong with him and you feel horrible for all the things that are happening to him. He's both a sympathetic character and a very emotional character, and Henrie pulls this off flawlessly well. Bridget Mendler does a good job as Arriety, being sweet and pulls off the teenage girl getting to figure out the big world very well. Arnett and Poelher both do good as Arriety's parents and it shows due to these two being married in real life and you believe they do care for Arriety and are both believable as these two characters. Carol Burnett is shockingly not that memorable in this movie, she plays the character of Hara, a woman who takes care of Shawn but is obsessed with catching the little people. Maybe its because the character is really not developed that well, but Burnett doesn't really have much to work with with this character in the film, unlike the other elderly actresses that Miyazaki has chosen before such as Suzanne Pleshette in Spirited Away or Lauren Bacall in Howl's Moving Castle. The animation, again like all of Miyazaki's other animated pictures is incredible, and for a movie with perspectives of smaller people to much larger people and animals leads to some very good eye candy to see in a Miyazaki movie. But other than that there isn't much really to talk about in terms of the animation. One thing I will say about this movie is that is quite possibly one of the emotional films that I've seen in a while, and one of those reasons is because of the music, the music in this movie are brilliantly done and the film has little to none of it, but they know when to use it to the films advantage, and it works incredibly well when it is used. Using piano music about 80% of the time also helps. Overall this is so far the best film that I've seen this year and it is definitely a wonderful film to go see, and it is one of the few movies to make me cry at the end, and it is quite possibly Studio Ghiblis most well told story out of all their films. My only problem I have with this movie is that the film does have a somewhat slow pace for a animated movie especially for a 90 minute animated film, but everything is all done extremely well and it is definitely one of Ghiblis best.

Changes in Education: A Teacher's Reflections

When I recently posted about the Hundred Languages of Children and asked whether schools today are sufficiently resourced to support the young child?s capacity for learning across much more than traditional academic subjects and teaching methods, Naomi, a fellow teacher currently working in an Australian kindergarten responded that she felt that positive changes were occurring, especially when compared with when she first began teaching in 1993. So I invited Naomi to share her reflections on the changes that she has observed over this time.

I am one of those lucky people that loves the job I do. I always have. I hope I always will. I began my teaching career in 1993. It was my final year of university and I was able to begin work as a relief teacher. The year following I began in earnest.

Over the years I have worked in primary schools, after school care, long day care and kindergarten. I am now teaching kindergarten and that is where I think I will stay.

Since I began there have been a lot of changes to education. Changes in the way we teach, the way learning is viewed. The way children, families and those who educate them interact has changed. Mostly I think for the better.

When I began it was all about the teacher. We knew best (or so I was told), parents didn?t know much and children even less. It?s an idea that never sat well with me, and I tried to find ways around the rigidity. It was hard to assume a position of utmost know-it-all authority over parents when I was just twenty-one. I can still see the looks on some parent?s faces as they politely asked me how old I was. Looking back I can see their point.

When I began, planning was something I did and kept to myself. It was not displayed. I certainly wouldn?t have wanted families to see it. Now it is displayed on the wall as well as kept in a journal along with daily reflections, with an open invitation for families to comment and add ideas and thoughts.

Using lollies on a Friday afternoon to keep the class in line was common practice, as was the showing of a G rated movie. Now in my class on Friday we bake and share bread, read books, dance, sing and play, always play.

Reports (academic report cards) then were written in teacher generated jargon and sometimes were little more than boxes being ticked. Now (in Victorian Kindergartens) the end of year report is a joint effort, with parts written by me, parts by the family and parts drawn by the child, as well as a space for their family and myself to write what the child wants to say in their own words.

As it stood, when I began teaching, the teacher held all the cards, had all the power. Now it is a team effort, part family, part child, part me, as well as any number of other participants, such as bi-lingual workers, integration assistants, speech and occupational therapists to name but a few.

The idea of a child centred philosophy was talked about a lot when I began, but no one really seemed to know exactly what that meant. It was a buzzword but behind that word nothing much seemed to change. Teachers taught what they wanted, in line with state curriculum and that was that. I struggled to be honest, trying to find a way of teaching that I felt I could practice and really believe in.

Fast forward to today. At the front of my planning folder is the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child. I have a document called Belonging, Being, Becoming that is a nationwide early childhood framework, underpinned by those same rights. It talks about a child?s identity, community, communication, wellbeing. It includes space for the child?s and the family?s voice to be heard, as well as the educators. It relies on the belief that a child does not learn in isolation. That they learn in relation to other people, in relation to family, friends, community, teachers. At all the conferences, seminars and workshops I attend, the speakers? talk of the child?s voice. Challenge those attending to really think about how the child?s voice is heard and responded to.

Now when I plan it is in response to children and families ? it is based on what they need, not what I think they should have. It is based on the idea that each child and family has different needs and wants. It can be a challenge, it can be hard. But it is always rewarding. And it is purposeful. It is a meeting of the ways. Some of the planning is intentional, it comes from me after observation, photographs and notes made about the children and what they need to be supported into the next stage of learning. Some of it is spontaneous and comes from something that happens during the day. Some of it comes from families and their suggestions, or because of a family need. Some comes from the children, from their play, their discussions or their out and out asking.

For me the biggest change is that as educators we acknowledge that children come to us already knowing so much. That we need to work with not against this, and that in doing so everyone benefits.

Some days are harder than others, like any job. But on the whole I love my role. The current thinking, research and documents around early childhood education support what I do and how I do it. They give me a way to ensure I am an advocate for the children in my care. An advocate for the right to play, to investigate, explore, get messy, dirty, have bare feet, run in the rain, make mud pies, to speak in their home language, celebrate special occasions, to belong and to be heard. Anything less is not enough.

The Chicago personal injury lawyers of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. will join the fight against brain cancer May 6 by participating in the Walk to End Brain Tumors in Libertyville.

On behalf of attorney Michael Schostok, the Illinois personal injury firm?s ?Team Grizzly? is raising money for the Heroes of Hope Grey Ribbon Crusade.

The Grey Ribbon Crusade is a national campaign to support brain cancer research. May is National Brain Tumor Awareness Month.

Salvi, a Chicago personal injury attorney and managing equity partner of the law firm. ?Hundreds of thousands of people are diagnosed with brain tumors every year. An estimated 190,000 people are diagnosed with primary or metastatic brain tumors annually, according to a Heroes of Hope press release. More than 200,000 others are currently living with life-threatening brain tumors across the U.S. Brain tumors are a leading cause of death in children and young men, the group says.

Salvi said that getting involved in the Grey Ribbon Crusade is a simple way for people to make a difference.????

?Wear a grey ribbon, make an online donation to Team Grizzly, form a pledge team or register to participate in the Walk to End Brain Tumors yourself,? the Chicago attorney urged. ?Every little bit helps.?

Salvi added that businesses can play a large part in bringing brain cancer research to the forefront.

?Companies often have the largest financial resources to commit to charitable campaigns, both in actual dollars and through in-kind contributions and sponsorships,? he said. ?It?s important to encourage the type of corporate social responsibility that will influence employees and the public to become active donors and volunteer-educators.?

The Walk To End Brain Tumors will start at 1 p.m. at Libertyville High School on May 6. Registration is $25 per walker or $15 for those 18 and under. Final registration takes place at 12:30 p.m.

Deadline looms for woman to turn over hard drive

DENVER?? Readily available, easy-to-use software can encrypt a computer hard drive so thoroughly it would take years for a hacker to break in. But that seems to be no impediment for U.S. government prosecutors, who have obtained an order compelling a Romanian immigrant to disclose the contents of her computer.

The case raises questions about whether requiring someone to unlock a computer's protected files amounts to a violation of the Fifth Amendment's protection against self-incrimination.

The judge's order establishes a "very dangerous precedent that a person may be forced to assist in her prosecution in a way the law has not seen ever before," said Phillip DuBois, who represents the woman charged in a mortgage and real estate fraud case.

On Tuesday, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to get involved, saying Ramona Fricosu's case must first be resolved in District Court before her attorney can appeal.

Fricosu now has until Monday to turn over an unencrypted version of the hard drive of a laptop.

Federal prosecutors argue that not allowing the government access to encrypted computers would make it impossible to prosecute crimes such as terrorism, child exploitation and drug trafficking. The U.S. attorney's office declined to comment on Tuesday's appeals court decision.

The San Francisco-based Electronic Freedom Foundation has opposed the government's actions in the case because it believes easy-to-use encryption software should be used by everybody to prevent computer crimes and fraud, said Hanni Meena Fakhoury, an attorney for the foundation. The case could render those privacy protections useless, he said.

"The government is flipping that on its head and saying encryption is only good for criminals to hide what they're doing," Fakhoury said.

A judge last month sidestepped the issue of ordering Fricosu to turn over her password, and instead ordered her to turn over an unencrypted version of the hard drive. Prosecutors had argued the password was like gaining a key to a lock box and other instances where a defendant signs documents to allow investigators to access overseas accounts.

U.S. District Judge Robert E. Blackburn noted that the contents of one's mind is off limits, but he ordered Fricosu to turn over the data, citing a Vermont case that related to a 2006 border crossing search in which a man was later ordered to do the same.

The courts in that case noted that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent had found child pornography on the computer but couldn't access it later because of encryption, and turning over the unencrypted hard drive added nothing to the evidence the government already had.

Blackburn also noted there were only a few cases on which to base his ruling.

In Fricosu's case, "the government has no idea what's on that computer," DuBois said. That element makes it different from other cases, he said.

In a procedure agreed upon by DuBois and federal prosecutors, federal agents would meet Fricosu at a designated place with the laptop, which was seized during a search warrant. Then, the government will either look away or go to another room while Fricosu enters a password on her laptop and hands it back to agents so the hard drive can be copied.

But there's a twist.

"It is possible that Ms. Fricosu has no ability to decrypt the computer, because she probably did not set up the encryption on that computer and may not know or remember the password or passphrase," DuBois said in a statement Tuesday.

Fricosu and her husband, Scott Whatcott, are accused of targeting distressed homeowners in Colorado. Prosecutors allege the two promised to pay off homeowners' mortgages but then filed fraudulent documents in court to obtain title and sell the homes without paying the outstanding mortgage.

DuBois described Fricosu as an immigrant from Romania who has two sons, no technical expertise in computers and whose computer was encrypted with what he believed was software available on the Internet or at stores.

With a few clicks of the mouse, readily available 256-bit and 512-bit encryption software makes computer hard drives almost impossible to break into, even for hackers.

"Conceptually, it is possible to break encryption," but it could take years, said Jay Bavisi of the U.S.-based EC-Council, a so-called "white hat" and ethical hacker group that tests network and computer security. "It can be a time-consuming and resource draining exercise in an already stressed environment."

In one of the few examples of a similar case, a sheriff's detective under suspicion for improper use of a law enforcement database told investigators in Washington state in 2004 that he simply forgot the password to the encrypted portion of his computer hard drive. The detective retired, and the computer's hard drive was placed into storage.

"We apparently did not ever crack the code to get in," sheriff's spokeswoman Cindi West said.

Asia stocks rise as banks dodge Greek debt hit

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stocks rose Friday as the U.S. jobs market showed new signs of improvement and global banks avoided a hit from Greece's debt crisis.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.4 percent to 9,747.80 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 1 percent to 21,607.49. South Korea's Kospi added 0.5 percent to 2,041.14. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.3 percent to 4,269.90.

Banks around the world are on the hook for as much as $70 billion in bond insurance payments if Greece defaults on its debt. But a panel ruled that Greece's plan to restructure its debt should not trigger any insurance payments, at least for now.

The panel, which had been convened by the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, had been asked by investors to rule whether the plan constituted a so-called credit event. It ruled that the Greek bond deal was still being carried out and did not yet constitute a credit event ? but that the question could come up again.

Meanwhile, in the latest sign of improvement in the U.S. jobs market, the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest point since March 2008. The four-week average was also the lowest in four years.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.2 percent to close at 12,980.30. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 0.6 percent to close at 1,374.09. The Nasdaq composite average rose 0.7 percent to 2,988.97.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 4 cents to $108.88 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.77 to finish at $108.84 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3323 from $1.3316 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 81.18 yen from 81.08 yen.
