BBB-Blog Dan Jape | Dan Jape - Reliable Heating and Air - Atlanta

As the warm spring weather arrives, homeowners frequently ask me if there is
anything they can do to ready their cooling system for summer. There are a few
simple steps that one can take to assure their system will be ready to take on
the hot muggy days of summer. Over the next few months I will go in depth about
some helpful cooling tips I have discovered over the years.
This month I
would like to give you some insight on the first and most important step in
summer cooling preparation-making sure to properly change the furnace air
filter. This should be done every month during the months when either the
heating or the cooling is operating. At under $3.00 a piece, it?s the best
investment you can make in your home?s heating and cooling system, considering
the fact that over 75% of the service calls we receive in the first thirty days
of the cooling system involve a dirty or improperly-sized filter. Over
three-quarters of the time, our technicians are cleaning dirty cooling coils,
blower wheels and clogged condensate water drains caused by homeowners not
changing their air filters.
Most of our customers incorrectly believe that
the job of their furnace filter is to remove airborne dust, dirt and pollens
from the air their family breathes. An even larger segment of our customers also
incorrectly believe that the job of their furnace filter is remove pet dander,
bird feathers, fish tank smell, cat pan stinks, small toys that junior threw
down the floor grills and smoke from uncle Harry?s cigar at Christmas. Well,
they are all wrong! The job of a properly designed and installed furnace air
filter is to keep the cooling coil/radiator clean and efficient during the life
of your system. Inside the duct work above your furnace is a cooling
coil/radiator called the evaporator coil, and outside of your home is a device
called the compressor/condenser. The job of the coil/radiator is to remove the
moisture and the heat from the air in your home and just like the coil/radiator
in your car, your home?s cooling coil needs just the right amount of airflow
going though its tightly packed fins. Just as your car will overheat if your fan
belt breaks, your air conditioner will overheat and stop working if coil becomes
clogged with dirt.
The fan blades that provide this airflow are in your
furnace and they are also protected and kept clean by a regular furnace filter
changing. If your furnace blower or your cooling coil becomes clogged with dirt,
a professional repairperson with have to be called as this cleaning requires
removal of both components and is very costly.
A dirty coil/blower wheel will
cause reduced airflow and possible icing of the compressor/condenser and cooling
coil. This icing causes many problems including the complete destruction of your
compressor/condenser. A unit with a dirty coil or furnace blower will run longer
generating higher power bills and will not be as efficient in transferring heat
as a clean coil and blower.
It is very important to use the correct size
filter so that all the incoming air is directed through the surface area of the
filter. Do not bend or fold a too large filter and make sure your filter is
properly held in place by a wire retainer or clip. Remember there is up to 2000
cubic feet of air blowing through your filter and it will be pulled out of place
unless firmly held in by a filter retainer clip. I can?t tell you the number of
times I find a furnace filter all mangled up and torn by the blower and dirt
just blowing right on the coil. It?s very hard to get the filter springs back in
place after you change the filter. Try lying down on the floor and with a
flashlight in hand partially crawl in the blower area to observe the filter
spring clip holder. Keep at it until it latches in place. If you are lucky
enough to have an external filter rack or holder, be sure and reinstall the door
correctly to make sure no air leakage occurs.
If you are using those 99-cent
blue fiberglass throwaway filters, STOP RIGHT NOW. Those filters are designed to
stop dirt particles the size of junior?s toys he throws down the grills and they
do a darn good job of it! But everything else smaller flies right through them
and builds up on the surface of your cooling coil where it joins with condensate
water to form a product ?coil scrounge?. Invest in the MERV 8 1? pleated filters
that cost about $3.00 a piece at your local home improvement store. Make sure
you buy a dozen at a time to make it easy to do. You will never remember to go
to the store every month. If you have an air cleaner or a hard to find filter
size do not give up. Give me a call and I will give you the name of a wholesale
supply house in your area that WILL sell to you. I have spoken to the manager
and they will be glad to help you directly. In the past I have heard from
homeowners that supply houses will not talk to them unless they are ?in the air
conditioning business?. I will gladly give you the name and number of this one
supplier you can purchase a full array of air cleaner and media filters at a
very reasonable price.
By changing your furnace filter often and correctly,
you can rest assured that you have done one of the most important functions in
assuring continued comfort, efficiency and life span of your home?s heating and
cooling system.

Stocks struggle as investors digest data

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks were wavering Thursday, as data on the labor market and Chinese manufacturing were offset by an easing of Spanish bond yields.

Labor Department data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell just a little last week to 387,000, while a monthly indicator of China's manufacturing activity fell to a seven-month low of 48.1.

A separate report showed home resales fell in May and the median sales price rose only because of a drop in sale of lower priced homes, casting a shadow on the country's nascent housing market recovery.

Earlier, shares in Europe turned positive after Spanish government bond yields eased, relieving markets after the country raised over two billion euros at a debt auction, albeit with a sharp rise in borrowing costs.

Madrid is expected to shed light on the dire state of its weaker banks and possibly makes a formal request for European Union funds to rescue them.

"We don't have earnings, we don't have a major economic release, we don't have the Fed and the Greek elections are in place," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital In Jersey City, New Jersey.

"Now the focus shifts and it's China and Spain -- you have concerns over the world's growth engine slowing, and concerns over the next target in the EU and how that gets addressed."

The Dow and S&P ended the prior session down slightly after the Federal Reserve delivered another round of monetary stimulus and said it was ready to do more to help a U.S. economic recovery that looks increasingly fragile, but refrained from announcing a third shot of quantitative easing.

The benchmark S&P 500 index had risen for four straight session in anticipation of more stimulus measures.

Philip Morris International Inc fell after revising its full year 2012 forecast, following in the footsteps of fellow large-cap multinationals PepsiCo and Procter & Gamble.

Onyxx Pharmaceuticals Inc surged after U.S. drug advisers backed the company's drug for patients who have failed to successfully treat their blood cancer with other medicines. Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc, which stands to receive royalties from sales of the drug, gained.

ConAgra Foods Inc advanced after it reported a quarterly net loss compared with a year-earlier profit, hurt by a change in accounting for pensions.

Celgene Corp slumped after the company said it was withdrawing a European application for wider use of its big-selling Revlimid blood cancer drug.

Ronan Farrow, Woody Allen's Son, Rips Dad in Father's Day Tweet

Legendary director Woody Allen had kind of an awkward Father's Day yesterday after his estranged son ripped him on Twitter with a joke about Woody and his wife.

When your wife used to be your stepdaughter, you're sorta asking for it.

Ronan Farrow, the 24-year-old son of Allen and Mia Farrow, posted on Twitter, "Happy father's day -- or as they call it in my family, happy brother-in-law's day."

Mia Farrow then re-tweeted the message ... and added the word, "BOOM."

According to reports, Ronan stopped speaking to his father back in 1992 when it was discovered Woody was cheating on Mia with Soon-Yi Previn.

That would be Mia Farrow's adopted daughter with her second husband, André Previn. Woody began dating Mia in 1980 when Soon-Yi was 10.

Fun fact: Ronan is a well-respected human rights activist, freelance journalist, Rhodes Scholar, lawyer and government official at age 24. Impressive.

TORONTO (AP) ? Investigators combed through the wreckage of a Toronto stage Sunday to determine what caused the structure to come crashing down ahead of a Radiohead concert, killing the band's drum technician and injuring three other crew members.

The British band said it was devastated over the death of Scott Johnson, a U.K. citizen in his 30s who was trapped under the rubble and pronounced dead at the scene.

"We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew," the band said on its website. "We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

Toronto Police spokesman Tony Vella said a 45-year-old man hospitalized with a head injury was improving and his life was not in danger. The other two crew members were treated at the scene.

Officials from the Ontario Ministry of Labor searched through the wreckage for clues to the cause of the collapse Saturday in Downsview Park. They were also investigating whether safety regulations and standards were followed and if staff were properly trained.

Ministry spokesman Matt Blajer said the massive structure is "still fairly unstable" and work is under way to make it safe.

He said the investigation is "fairly complex" and it could take some time to figure out exactly what happened. Blajer said they have three inspectors and two engineers going through the wreckage. They were provided with engineer drawings.

Vella said criminal charges could result but added that it's early in the investigation.

Live Nation, the company that organized the concert, did not immediately return calls seeking comment Sunday.

Radiohead's website had listed the concert as being sold out, with 40,000 tickets sold. The band said fans could get refunds for the cancelled show at points of purchase.

Police said the park wasn't full when the collapse occurred at about 4 p.m. but there was a considerable crowd already waiting for the show amid sunny skies.

Mike Kensey, 26, said he arrived at the venue hours early to get a spot close the stage and see the opening act by Canadian band Caribou.

"It was like fireworks went off and then boom, the stage just crumbled to the ground in a matter of seconds," he said. "I had never really seen anything like it."

Joseph McGuire, 28, said he drove from Warren, Michigan, to attend the concert.

"I was so bummed, coming all the way here to find out the show had been canceled, but I also thought we were pretty lucky that it didn't happen while the concert was going on," he said. "I couldn't imagine the chaos and even great potential injuries and possible deaths had it happened during the concert."

Many of the disappointed fans headed instead to Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto, where "Spinner Magazine" was hosting a free concert headlined by the Flaming Lips as part of the weeklong North by Northeast musical festival.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne paid tribute to Radiohead throughout the show, including performing a cover of Radiohead's "Knives Out," which he introduced saying "peace be with their hearts tonight."

"This has been a pretty powerful day. This goes out to the Radiohead family," he said.

There have been a number of concert stage collapses in recent years.

In Canada, one person died and several people were injured when the stage went down at Bluesfest in Ottawa last July, and one person died and more than a dozen were injured in 2009 when a powerful windstorm caused the main stage to collapse at the Big Valley Jamboree near Camrose.

Six people died last August when the stage collapsed at a Sugarland concert in Indianapolis; five died in Belgium when a storm swept in and toppled the stage at the Pukkelpop Festival.
