Tracing pollution links to asthma, allergy

Bad air tied to disabled immune-regulating cells

By Nathan Seppa

Web edition: February 25, 2013

SAN ANTONIO ? Bad actors in air pollution may contribute to asthma and allergy by subverting protective cells in the body that tone down immune reactions, researchers report. The pollution components also seem to rev up overactive immune warriors ? already linked to allergies ? that need no such prompting.

The airborne culprits are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, the products of incomplete burning of fuel in diesel engines, furnaces, wood fires, wildfires and even barbeque grills. Air pollution has been tied to asthma and allergy in past research, but the link between PAHs and these immune problems is still unclear.

In the new report, researchers show that children exposed to high levels of PAHs had poorly functioning T-regulatory cells, or T-regs, which normally ratchet down immune-caused inflammation as needed. ?T-regs are peacekeeper cells,? says Kari Nadeau, a physician and biochemist at Stanford University, who presented the findings February 23 at a meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. ?But in asthma, T-regs are impaired.?

The team also found that kids exposed to a lot of PAHs made excess amounts of an antibody called immunoglobulin E, or IgE. The IgE antibody normally helps the body fight parasites. But in developed countries, where parasitic infections are largely a thing of the past, IgE has become better known for its role in allergy. The body often cranks out IgE as part of a misguided immune reaction against noninfectious substances in the environment. IgE also shows up in asthma, which can be triggered by allergy.

To study the effect of air pollution on these immune players, Nadeau and her colleagues obtained blood tests, lung function readings and health information from 153 children, median age 14, in Fresno, Calif. The researchers used airborne PAH sampling to estimate exposure to PAHs, and chose Fresno because of its relatively high air pollution levels. Children with high exposure to PAHs, based on air sampling in and around their homes, made high amounts of IgE and had lower T-reg function than children exposed to low levels. High PAH exposure during the most recent three months was linked to 51 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with asthma.

?I think this is a very interesting and thought-provoking study,? says Todd Rambasek, an allergist at Ohio University in Athens. He notes that other studies had linked air pollution with asthma and allergy but failed to discern between PAH and ozone or particulate matter that could contribute to the conditions.

Nadeau also reported that consistent PAH exposure coincided with changes in a gene called Foxp3. As reported in Nature in 2010, Foxp3 seems to be a master regulator of T-reg populations in the body. Unfortunately, Nadeau says, the changes observed in the Foxp3 gene seem irreversible and widespread.

The asthma rate is 22 percent among children in Fresno, Nadeau says, compared with 12 percent in the United States as a whole. Up to 70 percent of people in Fresno have an allergy, she notes, more than double the average lifetime risk of having an allergy in California. The new study adds PAHs to a known pollution problem in the area: in 2012, Fresno County had the second-highest number of days with unhealthy air particulate matter among California counties.

Irene Monroe: The Boy Scouts of America: Another Closed Door for Black GBTQ Youth

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Black Church are rightly lauded for molding young black men into adult leaders. BSA troops have produced distinguished African-American scouts like retired four-star general Colin Powell, six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker.

African American participation in the Boy Scout movement dates back to 1911, and its impact has not only forced the integration of young black males into the organization, but also continues to address many of the challenges these young males confront today.

With young African-American males (particularly those in urban enclaves) at much higher risks for incarceration, gang violence, unemployment, fatherlessness and substance abuse, the BSA has been a source of constant and consistent strong positive male figures for these young black boys.

Like many BSA troops, African-American troops are often strongly affiliated with community black churches. These churches not only hold homophobic views, but also hold a tight-fisted hand on their non-gender-conforming males.

The BSA's position on GBTQ scouts is unquestionably discriminatory, and its hesitancy to swiftly remove its ban dishonors the organization's goal and philosophy, "to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law."

This means that GBTQ black youths cannot catch the lifeline that the BSA provides their straight brethren due to the homophobia of the church and the BSA. It's no wonder these youths have higher incidents of homelessness.

The BSA's national office is housed in Texas, the heart of the Bible Belt, and that reflects the religiously conservative influence on the organization's policies.

Although the BSA is a civic organization that has local chapters in public schools, a large number of them are equally affiliated with religious institutions. Those religious groups have a disproportionate influence on the organization.

Most of these religious institutions interpret and impose both the Scout Oath and Scout Law from their conservative theological perspective -- and the Black Church is not alone in doing so. The Church of the Latter Day Saints, for example, has a huge influence on the BSA because the church mandates that all male youths join the Boy Scouts.

New York Times reporter Erik Eckholm writes in his recent article "As Partner, Mormons and Scouts Turn Boys into Men:"

With mutual exaltation of God and country and a shared aim of nurturing "morally straight" men with leadership skills and a service ethic, the Mormons and the Boy Scouts seem made for each other, as entwined as a square knot. And in an unusual partnership dating to 1913, the Mormon Church has embraced scouting wholesale, giving it a central role in preparing male youths for their two-year missionary stints and adulthood as lay priests.

The basis for discrimination against gay scouts and gay scout leaders pivots around two beliefs: the Judeo-Christian tenets about homosexuality and the myth that there is an inherent correlation between male homosexuality and pedophilia. Although these beliefs have been successfully refuted they are strategically upheld to maintain its ban.

The BSA's 2004 position statement on homosexuality that has not changed states, "We believe that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the requirement of the Scout oath that a Scout be morally straight and in the Scout law that a Scout be clean in word and deed, and that homosexuals do not provide a desirable role model for Scouts."

The words "morally straight" and "clean" are what have fueled the BSA's homophobic stance and consequently have given rise to both its misinterpretation and misuse of the group's own guidelines.

While "morally straight" and "clean" have everything to so with being a scout, they have nothing to do with a scout's sexual orientation. The original interpretation of both words are about virtue, readiness and open-mindedness in the context of human service, and a scout's commitment to teamwork, honesty, respect for others, and community service.

The truth that needs to be told is that the BSA's is fighting itself, and needs to come out of the closet about its founder. Perhaps that would dispel the dispute about gay scouts.

Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell (1857- 1941) was believed to be gay. A number of biographies on Baden-Powell alluded to his homosexuality. Tim Jeal, the author of "The Boy-Man: The Life of Lord Baden-Powell," wrote, "The available evidence points inexorably to the conclusion that Baden-Powell was a repressed homosexual."

Jeal further states that in Baden-Powell's diaries and correspondences, Baden-Powell wrote frequently about his "enjoyment at watching young men swim naked; enjoy nude men; (and) expressed disdain for female nudity." Also, Baden-Powell had an "extremely close, decades-long friendship" with Kenneth McLaren, "with whom he served in the British military and always made sure he bunked."

The Black Church's silent stance of BSA's continued ban on gays help strengthen the church's belief that strong black male leadership is exclusively heterosexual.

However, if both the Black Church and BSA goals are to continue to nurture the talents and gifts of all its young males, then they must ask themselves to what degree does their stance on homophobia hinders their goal?

DURHAM, N.C. | Elizabeth Williams had 20 points and 13 rebounds to help No. 5 Duke beat No. 19 Florida State 61-50 on Friday night.

Chloe Wells added 15 points for the Blue Devils (25-1, 15-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who won their 37th consecutive home game against ACC competition.

Duke trailed 24-20 early in the second half but seized control with a 26-4 run over the next 9 minutes.

Wells hit a jumper from the free throw line to give the Blue Devils a 28-26 lead with 15:36 remaining, and they never trailed again.

Alexa Deluzio scored 16 points to lead Florida State (20-6, 10-5), which lost its sixth straight matchup with Duke. Natasha Howard added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Seminoles.

#6 California 77, Oregon 55

BERKELEY, Calif. | Layshia Clarendon scored 14 points and No. 6 California won its school-record 12th straight game with a victory over Oregon on Friday night.

Afure Jemerigbe added 13 points for the Bears (24-2, 14-1 Pac-12), who early on looked somewhat ragged offensively with starting point guard Brittany Boyd sitting out because of a strained groin.

Webber International 61, St. Thomas 61, OT

MIAMI GARDENS | Webber International upset 11th-ranked St. Thomas in the first semifinal of the 2013 Sun Conference Championship.

The upset victory by Webber International (14-13) snapped a 15-game win streak for St. Thomas (27-3). Webber's Jasmine Singleton hit a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score 56-56 and send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, a jumper by Kristin Throckmorton, followed by a free throw by Alishia Kahan, put the Warriors ahead by four points with 40 seconds to play.

A put-back jumper by STU's Danielle Ciccarone off a missed three-pointer by Shanika Brooks cut the lead to two points with 17 seconds left.

With four seconds to go, WIU's Erin Henry made the first of two free throws, then grabbed her own rebound off a missed free throw on her second attempt to secure the final score.

St. Louis 65, #15 Butler 61

INDIANAPOLIS | Saint Louis coach Jim Crews and Butler's Brad Stevens nearly echoed each other when assessing the key to Friday night's game.

"I think the start to the second half was key," Crews said after Saint Louis took control of the Atlantic 10 race with a 65-61 comeback win over the No. 15 Bulldogs.

Mike McCall had 18 points and Kwamain Mitchell scored 10 of his 12 in the second half to help Saint Louis rally.

Dwayne Evans added 17 points for the Billikens, who won for the fourth time this season against a Top 25 opponent ? a school record ? and earned their ninth victory in a row in Atlantic 10 play. The previous eight had all been by 10 points or more.

Saint Louis (21-5, 10-2) remains firmly in control in the conference, holding a one-game lead over No. 24 Virginia Commonwealth.

Ride along as deep-sea diving crew uncovers 48 tons of silver

The Odyssey heads out on one of its voyages. (Discovery Channel)In July 2012, the crew of the deep-sea recovery team Odyssey Marine Expedition (OME) unearthed a record-setting 48 tons of silver from a sunken World War II-era British naval vessel, the SS Gairsoppa.

A camera crew was along for the ride, documenting the trip three miles below the surface. This Sunday, Discovery Channel viewers will have the chance to ride along with the crew of the OME to see firsthand what a deep-sea treasure hunt looks like during the broadcast of ?Silver Rush.?

OME?s Senior Project Manager Andrew Craig and CEO Mark Gordon spoke with Yahoo News about the voyage and what viewers can expect.

?The big thing with this expedition is we went looking for a wreck in such deep water. The Gairsoppa was sunk in water nearly a mile deeper than the Titanic,? Craig said. ?We knew the silver payload was on the manifest, but as far as where we could find it when we got there, we really didn?t know when we started this sort of adventure.?

?The challenge we had was how to surgically open up a shipwreck in 15,000 feet in water,? added Gordon. ?It was a little like looking for a needle in a haystack.?

In fact, when the OME recovered the 48 tons of precious metal, the discovery temporarily sent the world silver market prices reeling.

?I don?t think anything will ever again carry that huge amount of silver,? Craig said. ?These were just such uncommon times during World War II. The British government had to get this back to the U.K. for the war effort."

The story of the Gairsoppa is fascinating. It was a tram steamer enlisted to aid the war effort, along with many other nonmilitary vessels. During the trip from India back to the U.K., the ship ran low on fuel and became separated from its convoy of 26 vessels.

As it drifted astray, the Gairsoppa was tracked down and torpedoed by a German U-boat. Thirty-six members of the 86-man crew made it into lifeboats, about 400 miles from the shore.

?These merchant seaman, it was almost another army of people that nobody really knows about,? Craig said. ?They were on boats that just didn?t have any protection. They were at the luck of the gods as to whether they even made it back or not.?

After weeks adrift at sea, only three men made it to shore alive. And by the time British medical personnel made it to the lifeboat, only one man, Richard Ayres, remained alive.

?Richard Ayers was in the water for 17 days before he eventually ended up on the south coast of England,? Craig said. ?Despite going through that tragedy, he went on to have a fulfilling life, went back to work on the sea and lived to be 90 years old before passing away in 1990.?

Hosted by Mike Rowe, the "Silver Rush" series will also follow the OME crew as they explore two other vessels with cargoes worth a collective $1 billion or more: The SS Mantola, an ocean liner that sank in 1917 off the Irish coast, and HMS Victory, the former flagship of the Royal British Navy which was lost in 1744 while housing what may now be worth upward of $1 billion in gold.

Gordon says the OME uncovered far more than the record-setting 1,023 bars of silver from the Gairsoppa, including 1,700 tons of tea, burlap bags ?full of God knows what,? the captain?s personal silver service set and other ?really interesting artifacts.?

?We?re not done. We?re going back this summer,? Gordon said. ?We?ve only recovered 42 percent of the registered, insured cargo.?

Research suggests malaria can be defeated without a globally led eradication program

Friday, February 22, 2013

Malaria does not have to be eradicated globally for individual countries to succeed at maintaining elimination of the disease, according to research from the University of Florida's Emerging Pathogens Institute and department of geography, to be published in the journal Science Feb. 22.

Researchers Andrew Tatem and Christina Chiyaka found that those countries that have eliminated malaria have maintained their malaria-free states with remarkable stability, going against traditional theory. Between 1945 and 2010, 79 countries eliminated malaria and 75, or 95 percent, remained malaria-free, shrinking the geographic range of the disease, the researchers said.

For the 99 countries with endemic malaria today, the research by Tatem and his colleagues has important implications for tackling the problem. The elimination of malaria may be less costly to achieve and maintain than previously thought, Tatem said.

"Traditional theory suggests that we have to get rid of malaria completely, all across the world, all at around the same time, to keep new cases from being imported and starting outbreaks in elimination countries all over again," said Tatem, who conducted the research at UF and now is a professor at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Chiyaka also has moved to the United Kingdom with her family.

The researchers found, however, that malaria elimination may be a 'sticky state,' meaning that once elimination is achieved, resurgence becomes a rare event.

"For instance, the United States imports 1,500 cases of malaria per year but has seen very few local outbreaks resulting from these, despite still having mosquitoes capable of spreading malaria," Tatem said. "The United States doesn't have active control measures in place, but does have a well-functioning detection system in place to take care of it."

Tatem said that many factors, working in combination, have likely contributed to the stability of malaria elimination seen in many countries. These include urbanization, which creates environments that are unfavorable for malaria-spreading mosquitoes; improvements in surveillance within health systems to ensure that imported cases are treated promptly and any local outbreaks are controlled early; and travel patterns, with travelers who bring in infections from elsewhere rarely ending up in rural areas where mosquito densities are highest, thus reducing the likelihood of onward spread.

Malaria has long been a global health issue. In 1955, the World Health Organization launched an eradication campaign that eliminated the disease in many temperate and subtropical regions but did not achieve worldwide eradication. The program was scrapped after less than two decades in favor of controlling malaria. However, WHO attributed about 660,000 deaths to the disease in 2010, mostly African children.

Scientists make older adults less forgetful in memory tests

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at Baycrest Health Sciences' Rotman Research Institute (RRI) and the University of Toronto's Psychology Department have found compelling evidence that older adults can eliminate forgetfulness and perform as well as younger adults on memory tests.

Scientists used a distraction learning strategy to help older adults overcome age-related forgetting and boost their performance to that of younger adults. Distraction learning sounds like an oxymoron, but a growing body of science is showing that older brains are adept at processing irrelevant and relevant information in the environment, without conscious effort, to aid memory performance.

"Older brains may be be doing something very adaptive with distraction to compensate for weakening memory," said Ren?e Biss, lead investigator and PhD student. "In our study we asked whether distraction can be used to foster memory-boosting rehearsal for older adults. The answer is yes!"

"To eliminate age-related forgetfulness across three consecutive memory experiments and help older adults perform like younger adults is dramatic and to our knowledge a totally unique finding," said Lynn Hasher, senior scientist on the study and a leading authority in attention and inhibitory functioning in younger and older adults. "Poor regulation of attention by older adults may actually have some benefits for memory."

The findings, published online February 21 in Psychological Science, ahead of print publication, have intriguing implications for designing learning strategies for the mature, older student and equipping senior-housing with relevant visual distraction cues throughout the living environment that would serve as rehearsal opportunities to remember things like an upcoming appointment or medications to take, even if the cues aren't consciously paid attention to.

The study

In three experiments, healthy younger adults recruited from the University of Toronto (aged 17- 27) and healthy older adults from the community (aged 60 -- 78) were asked to study and recall a list of words after a short delay and again, on a surprise test, after a 15-minute delay.

During the delay period, half of the studied words occurred again as distraction while people were doing a very simple attention task on pictures. Although repeating words as distracters had no impact on the memory performance of young adults, it boosted older adults' memory for those words by 30% relative to words that had not repeated as distraction.

"Our findings point to exciting possibilities for using strategically-placed relevant distraction as memory aids for older adults -- whether it's in classroom, at home or in a long term care environment," said Biss.

While older adults are watching television or playing a game on a tablet, boosting memory for goals (such as remembering to make a phone call or send a holiday card) could be accomplished by something as simple as running a stream of target information across the bottom of their tablet or TV.

The study was supported by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Germany wants Cyprus banks, Russian clients to fund bailout: media

BERLIN (Reuters) - Euro zone states including Germany want to make a bailout for Cyprus conditional on the island's banks, and maybe their Russian clients, sharing the cost, but the European Commission fears this could spook investors, according to German media.

Business daily Handelsblatt said Germany was pushing for a so-called "bail-in" to include private investors in the 17.5 billion euro rescue deal for Cyprus, adding that the "most radical option" involved using Cypriot's private bank deposits.

The newspaper, which did not cite any sources for the report, said the German government was pushing this line because Chancellor Angela Merkel was not assured of majority support in the Bundestag lower house of parliament for a Cypriot bailout.

Her own conservatives and the centre-left opposition - which has so far backed her efforts to stabilize the euro zone - are in campaign mode ahead of September's election and fear German voters may consider aid for Cyprus as a bailout of Russians who launder their money in the island's banks.

"Rich Russians should pay for Cyprus," said a front-page headline in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. Citing sources in the negotiations with Cyprus, it said euro zone states wanted "rich people and businesses who have stowed their money in Cyprus to share the costs of the planned rescue package".

Censorship row erupts after City University shuts down Muslim students' Friday prayer meeting

Muslim students at a London university have had their weekly Friday prayer meeting on campus shut down because they refused to allow staff members to view and pre-authorise their sermons before delivery.

City University ordered the students to submit their weekly khutbah sermon in advance of the gatherings so that they could check ?the quality and appropriateness of what is being delivered.? The students refused saying the demand amounted to outright censorship on campus.

City University has previously struggled with radicalism from its Islamic Society. In 2010 the Quilliam Foundation, an anti-extremism think-tank, published a report accusing its members of intimidating other students, particularly those on the campus newspaper, as well as gay, Jewish and female students.

In one sermon, which was recorded, the speaker said: "The Islamic state teaches to cut the hand of the thief. Yes it does. And it also teaches us to stone the adulterer. When they tell us that, the Islamic state tells us and teaches us to kill the apostate, yes it does.?

However it is not clear if the Friday prayers, which are not run by the Islamic Society, have been a cause for concern when it comes to radical or hate speeches. A source at the University told The Independent that the decision to close down the Friday prayers was not triggered by a single recent event or a recent rise in concern of radicalism. Instead it was taken after ?long and careful consideration?.

Muslim students on campus believe they have been unfairly targeted. They have set up a campaign group, Muslim Voices on Campus, to protest the closure of the prayer facilities.

?All our sermons are open, we welcome all students and all staff,? Wasif Sheikh, a member of the MVoC told the BBC.? "But when you start submitting your sermons to be monitored and scrutinised then there's a chance for it to be dictated what's allowed and what's not allowed. We, as students, don't accept that."

The Government has repeatedly ordered Universities to take a tougher stance against Islamist radicalism on campus. In 2011 a cross-parliamentary group of MPs and peers claimed fundamentalism was still flourishing. However, many universities and academics are loathe to monitor or crack down on radicalism given that campuses are exactly the kind of places where free speech, radical thinking and the countering of extremist ideas should be openly encouraged.

In a statement, City University said the room used was never a dedicated space specifically for Friday prayers and was instead an area that students could use for various activities ranging from meetings to pilates classes. Last year the University asked those organising the prayers to submit their sermons in advance and keep them online afterwards for people to view.

?Friday prayers were deemed University events open to all students and staff, and are not solely a student or student society event,? the statement read. ?As such the University needs to be assured of the quality and appropriateness of what is being delivered and that all students eligible to deliver prayers and sermons are considered equally and given the opportunity to do so.?

The statement added: ?Despite repeated requests and assurances, the information from those students leading Friday prayers was not forthcoming. Whilst this was a disappointment, the University could not continue to condone an activity taking place on its premises where it cannot exercise reasonable supervision.?

The university also said it had given students alternative options for Friday prayers that were away from campus but nearby.

In a series of video messages on the MVoC Facebook page, Muslim students have voiced their outrage at the decision.

?I feel the utmost anger,? one unnamed student said in the video. ?If I was to recommend this university to other students I would think twice. To be taking away this massive right for us. This is not just a concern for Muslims around the university, we should get everyone involved as well.?

Another added: ?Many Muslims on campus and international students will go elsewhere to a different university, who accepts us, accepts our religion, our values and our morals.?

Giulio Folino, president of the City University Student Union, said he had sympathy for both sides of the argument and was working to try and find a solution. ?It is important that both the University and students recognise the importance of balancing rights and responsibilities,? he said. ?Whilst it is right that the University needs to be reassured of the appropriateness of discussions on university property, I also believe that this should not interfere with freedom of speech on campus.?

However the Ex-Muslims Forum, a group set up to support those who have left Islam, said Muslim students at City University needed to publicly distance themselves from extremist Islamist statements that had been made in the past by their followers.

Siberian Caves Reveal Advancing Permafrost Thaw

Melting of significant portions of Arctic permafrost could accelerate climate change into a catastrophe

frost-crystals-at-cave-entrance PERMAFROST CAVE: The frost crystals at the entrance to the Ledyanaya Lenskaya cave in Russia denote the region's permafrost, which has been in place for roughly 400,000 years, according to the cave's speleothems. Image: Vladimir V Alexioglo

Permafrost is not so permanent. Across the Arctic, swathes of once-frozen-solid ground have begun to thaw. If the records preserved in Siberian caves are accurate, much more of the region could melt if temperatures continue to warm.

Geoscientist Anton Vaks of the University of Oxford led an international team of experts?including the Arabica Caving Club in Irkutsk?in sampling the spindly cave growths known as stalagmites and stalactites across Siberia and down into the Gobi Desert of China. Taking samples of such speleothems from six caves, the researchers then reconstructed the last roughly 500,000 years of climate via the decay of radioactive particles in the stone. When the ground is frozen above a cave no water seeps into it, making such formations "relicts from warmer periods before permafrost formed," the researchers wrote in a study published online in Science on 21 February.

The details of the study reveal that conditions were warm enough even in Siberia for these mineral deposits to form roughly 400,000 years ago, when the global average temperature was 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than present. It also suggests that there was no permafrost in the Lena River region at that time, because enough water seeped into the northernmost cave to enable roughly eight centimeters of growth in the formations.

That was, in fact, the last time the formations in the Ledyanaya Lenskaya Cave grew, although other caves further south showed multiple periods of growth coinciding with other warmer periods. "That boundary area of continuous permafrost starts to degrade when the mean global temperature is 1.5 degrees C higher than present," Vaks explains. "Such a warming is a threshold after which continuous permafrost zone starts to be vulnerable to global warming."

Since Vaks's present is the "preindustrial late Holocene," that means the planet is already more than halfway there, having experienced 0.8 degree C warming to date. Such a thaw is no small matter, given that permafrost covers nearly a quarter of the land in the Northern Hemisphere and holds roughly 1,700 gigatonnes of carbon?or roughly twice as much carbon as is currently trapping heat in the atmosphere. Much of that carbon would end up in the atmosphere if the permafrost was to thaw further.

That may not have occurred during the warm period 400,000 years ago, known as Marine Isotope Stage 11 to scientists, which featured elements such as boreal forest on Greenland and higher sea levels. "The thawing was probably very brief because the layer deposited in the northernmost cave stalactite was relatively thin," Vaks says?too thin in fact to determine how long the warm period lasted. "We don't see any extraordinary increase in atmospheric CO2 or methane during MIS-11." And the Gobi Desert might benefit, enjoying wetter conditions in the future if the record in these caves is accurate.

It's not clear how far north such thawing might extend if global average temperatures continue to warm until they match those from long ago. "Now we are looking for caves with speleothems in northern Siberia to answer this question," Vaks notes, adding that the northernmost cave is already much warmer than in the late 18th century based on historical reports. But it is clear that global climates not much warmer than present are enough to thaw even more permafrost?as far north as 60 degrees latitude.

"The potential impact of these results extends to global policy: these results indicate the potential release of large amounts of carbon from thawed permafrost even if we attain the 2 degree [C] warming target under negotiation," says Kevin Schaefer, a scientist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center, who has also studied permafrost but was not involved in this effort. "Permafrost thaws slowly and the carbon will be released into the atmosphere over two to three centuries."

Already, such thawing Arctic ice?whether underground or at sea?has further opened up the territory to exploration for resources, particularly oil. At the same time, the big thaw will make getting the oil out more expensive?billions of dollars in infrastructure investments in pipelines, roads and the like will be damaged as the ground shifts beneath them.

Off the Dribble: Basketball Dream Takes a Detour, to Israel

Growing up in Brooklyn dreaming of playing in the N.B.A., Ramel Bradley, now 28, never imagined he would one day have his name on the back of an Israeli league jersey.

After a successful college run at Kentucky, Bradley started his professional basketball career in 2008 like a trail of N.B.A. hopefuls before him, in Europe. Bradley, a 6-2 guard, played a season for Cedevita in Croatia and a season for Dijon in France.

In 2010, his attention turned somewhere unexpected ? the Middle East. While considering playing elsewhere in Europe, he received an offer from the Israeli professional basketball league Maccabi Ashdod.

It was an offer that Bradley debated. ?I was skeptical about coming,? he said in a telephone interview. He had a laundry list of questions, including whether there was a war going on, if it is safe and, ?Are the people crazy??

?A lot of my family was pretty nervous,? he said. ?They?d say, ?Wow, I?m seeing on CNN there?s missiles launching there.? I was nervous too.?

As his departure for Israel neared, his fears were allayed. ?A month before getting on the plane I would go out and every person I would go out to meet was Jewish or Israeli and they would said, ?Listen, when you get to Israel it?s going to be amazing. Tel Aviv is like a small New York City with a beach,? so that eased my woes about making my decision. ?

He decided to give it a shot.

When Bradley arrived in Israel, he quickly found comfort, he said. ?Everyone spoke English, the street signs are in English. It?s very easy to be comfortable in my lifestyle,? he said, noting a handful of fellow Americans playing basketball professionally around Israel.

Bradley, who said he grew up a religious Christian in Brooklyn, became comfortable enough to stay ? he?s now in his third year of playing professionally in Israel. He played for Maccabi Ashdod before moving to Hapoel Jerusalem and then his current team, Barak Netanya.

Bradley said he was quick to notice the work ethic of the players in Israel. ?Everyone works a lot harder here,? he said, comparing the Israeli league to his time playing both Europe and in college. At home, he said, ?You have your key players who do whatever they want to do on the court but here, the game is a lot more team-oriented, everyone has to do their job.?

That mindset can mess with confidence levels, he said. If a player misses a shot, the whole team, and coaches, are going to ask why he didn?t pass the ball. Imagine LeBron James in that situation.

?When you win games like that, as a team, it makes you really happy,? Bradley said. ?It?s not like ?I?m the man, I did it by myself? ? it?s more like a family.?

Not all of the game day adjustments were easy ones though, Bradley said with a hint of exasperation. ?One thing that surprised me a lot of how the game is called by the referees,? he said. ?They call traveling their way, the way they make the call is very unpredictable and it?s something that you really have to get over and add it to your game, or it can throw your rhythm off.?

Also a blinding difference? ?Fans in Israel are a lot more crazy, sometimes it?s almost scary,? he said with a chuckle. ?In the States, if a guy screams or curses, they?ll be kicked out of the arena. Here they scream, curse, throw things on the court? Sometimes the ref has to cater to the fans since the fans are so crazy.?

Bradley recalled a game a few weeks ago where the game had to stop at least three times when the fans tried, repeatedly, to break through the bottom railing to get onto the court. ?But the fans stay ? we have to cater to them,? he said. ?I?ll never be able to get used to that.?

But the fans show their support with equal zeal on the streets. ?It?s great feeling walking outside, Israeli kids run up to me and know my name ?Bradley! Bradley!?? he said. ?I?m recognized almost everywhere I go, we?re living our N.B.A. life overseas.?

As it is in most of the Middle East, quiet months can be interrupted by violence and turbulence.

?When I first got here, it worried me quite a bit but now that I?ve been here for a bit, I got used to it? just playing this game, this simple game, put our minds at ease,? he said. ?I feel more safe here than I do walking in the street back home, it?s something that you have to be here to understand.?

The increased violence between Israel and Gaza in November 2012 reminded Bradley of the fragility of his current home.

But it was basketball that he, and many others, used as therapy to distract him from the outside reality. Bradley volunteered for Netanya Hoops for Kids (NHK) as it organized a retreat for children from the southern city of Be?er Sheeva, a city that was frequently under ?red alert? for incoming rockets.

?Their minds couldn?t have been further from what was going on at home,? he said. ?They were just focused on getting better at basketball.?

?It was also very humbling knowing that I could help these kids, put a smile on their faces, and keep them happy through ball. It shows it?s not about where you?re from but making the most of the time that you have in the moment.?

It?s that kind of community outreach that has put Bradley at ease, giving him a home in a faraway land.

But the proud Brooklynite doesn?t feel far away from New York. ?I feel like I?m home even though I?m not at home. And that?s probably the number one thing about being here in Israel,? he said. He?s a Brooklyn Nets fan (he posts pictures of Brooklyn Nets gear in Israel on Twitter) and said, ?Every time I meet someone, I say ?I?m from New York? and they say, ?Oh, I have family in New York.?

?I would really like it if i did get an opportunity to stay here and play a couple more seasons,? he said. ?If it was in God?s plan for me to be here, I?d love to.?

Bradley suddenly stopped mid-sentence, and shouted at a friend passing by: ?Hello! How are you! Shabbat Shalom!? He was home.

Correction: February 20, 2013

An earlier version of this post misstated Ramel Bradley's age. He is 28, not 27.

CFO Jeff Atwater Protects Florida?s Construction Workers During Statewide Sweep

TALLAHASSEE?Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced today the results of a two-day statewide sweep of 375 construction jobsites to protect construction employees by ensuring compliance with Florida?s workers? compensation laws. Investigators contacted more than 770 employers and issued 70 citations to construction companies and other businesses that put their employees at risk by failing to carry the required workers? compensation insurance.

?The goal of this sweep was to ensure the safety of Florida?s workforce, especially in the construction industry, where workers encounter potentially dangerous situations daily,? CFO Jeff Atwater said. ?Construction companies that don?t carry the required workers? comp coverage put their employees at great risk and, through gaming the system, are able to outbid responsible companies that play by the rules.?

Investigators with the Department of Financial Services? Division of Workers? Compensation Bureau of Compliance and Division of Insurance Fraud made random site visits this week to ensure that employees were covered by the required workers? compensation insurance. Under state law, businesses engaged in the construction industry are required to obtain workers? compensation coverage when they employ one or more employees, including the owner. Businesses engaged in the non-construction industry are required to obtain workers? compensation coverage when they employ four or more employees, excluding business owners, who are exempt.

When an employer receives a citation or Stop Work Order (SWO), the business must immediately cease all operations until the employer obtains coverage for its employees. SWOs are issued for violations including failure to obtain workers? compensation coverage, under-reporting payroll such as paying employees in cash instead of payroll checks and misclassifying employees in order to receive a lower workers? compensation rate. During this sweep, five employers were found working in violation of an already issued SWO.

As Florida?s CFO, Atwater oversees the Department of Financial Services? Division of Workers? Compensation, which conducts approximately 34,000 onsite investigations yearly. For more information about CFO Atwater?s Division of Workers? Compensation or to submit a complaint, visit www.MyFloridaCFO.com or call (850) 413-1609.

Rare Sumatran tiger cub born at San Francisco zoo

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A Sumatran tiger gave birth to an apparently healthy cub at the San Francisco Zoo over the weekend in a rare boost to the critically endangered subspecies, zookeepers said on Thursday.

There are estimated to be as few as 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild, and zookeepers were monitoring the pair in the zoo's secluded Lion House via webcam to allow the 9-year-old mother, named Leanne, and baby to bond with little human interference.

"All signs seem to be positive so far," said Corinne MacDonald, San Francisco Zoo curator of carnivores and primates.

"Mom and cub are bonding," she said, adding the cub appeared to be healthy and was active and eating a lot.

The unnamed cub was the first tiger born at the San Francisco Zoo since 2008, when Leanne delivered a litter of three males. The cubs were transferred to zoos across the United States. Before 2008, the zoo had not had a tiger birth in 30 years.

Zoo staff will not know the gender of the newborn until its first examination at least two weeks from now.

"These births are definitely rare," said Dr. Tara Harris, a tiger specialist with the North American accrediting group Association of Zoos and Aquariums. About 75 Sumatran tigers are in captivity in North America and give birth to two to four litters a year, she added.

The cub, which will stay at the zoo for a year and a half before zookeepers decide whether to transfer it, was fathered by a 6-year-old tiger named Larry, who was temporarily transferred from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans for breeding.

Leanne was one of a handful of tigers worldwide to receive prenatal sonograms and exams while awake. Captive tigers are generally put under during the pregnancy exams, which can be dangerous to the mammals.

"It's so much better for these animals not to have to be sedated. Many animals have adverse reactions to the anesthesia, which can be worse than the actual procedure," MacDonald said.

In the wild, Sumatran tigers - the smallest of six tiger subspecies - are found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in lowland and mountain forests. Habitat destruction and poaching are the main reasons for the tigers' endangerment.
