replacement windows virginia beach, sidi - Vinyl and Its ...

Secure homes are necessary all over the world. A strong home can shield the family from the extreme climate in both wet and dry places. This can be attained by making homes with vinyl sidings and windows.

What homeowners and their contractors refer to as vinyl is in fact polyvinyl chloride, which is a tough plastic-type that is sought after for its high effectiveness against chemical deterioration, water, and heat. It's at the moment the third-most extensively produced plastic material in the world. Frequently used in commercial purposes similar to waste management and plumbing tasks, polyvinyl chloride has resistive attributes that allow it to be useful for sidings and window frames. As construction materials, polyvinyl chloride is also liked for its high durability, safeguarding facilities against physical trauma, water, or fire.

Sidings are essential for a few homes since these offer protection from dampness and heat, in addition to insulation during winter season. Sidings are typically set up in the panel layout, with the sidings installed as planks on the outside of the wall. In most architectural styles, the sidings present additional aesthetic value in shingle form.

Both kinds can be realized by utilizing vinyl siding since this plastic material can be shaped to appear similar to coated wooden siding. This is ideal for households who like wooden siding but are concerned with the proven fact that wood is at risk of humidity, specifically in Virginia's humid subtropical climate. Moreover, vinyl siding is more consistent, which makes it less susceptible to allowing in air and moisture through spaces between the cladding. The brilliant shading of the siding cuts down on the need to have the siding regularly repainted as the cladding does not peel, fade. flake.

The kinds of siding Virginia Beach homeowners acquire are strongly suggested because these are much more durable than the wood siding it imitates. Because vinyl siding is made of plastic, it doesn't turn out to be shriveled with age and is more proof against breaking. This protects houses from rain that might seep in-between the siding and break down walls with moss infestation. This is instead beneficial in Virginia Beach's humid subtropical climate.

The replacement windows Virginia Beach homeowners desire are usually manufactured with polyvinyl chloride. Whether a home is new or old, polyvinyl chloride window structures are superior since these give both protection and aesthetic value. Support frames are less likely to scratch against one another, specifically in the case of roller windows and single- or double-hung windows.

The kinds of windows Virginia Beach inhabitants require are the ones that allow adequate natural light into the home. Nonetheless, like vinyl sidings, vinyl windows repel air and moisture. This minimizes noise and keeps power bills manageable. To learn more, go to EnergyStar.gov and NFRC.org.

Information Technology Degree Job Opportunities

Information technology degrees allow students to pursue their dreams of working with computers. By completing a degree program in information technology, graduates will be prepared to take on a job as a technical support specialist, computer programmer, or computer systems designer.

Information Technology Degree Programs

A degree in information technology will allow a student to understanding computers, information processing, and networking systems. Students pursuing this type of degree program may be asked to take coursework in:

  • Programming
  • Network administration
  • Operating systems
  • Computer science
  • Information security
  • Database administration

Most information technology degrees are completed at the bachelor degree level, although graduate programs within the field are also an option at many schools. A graduate program is almost necessary in order to obtain a career in research, but bachelor?s degree level graduates will be prepared to pursue a career as a computer systems designer, technical support specialist, or computer programmer.

Computer Systems Designer Job Opportunities for Information Technology Degree Graduates

Professionals that work as computer systems designers generally work for firms or are self-employed. They are usually hired out on a temporary or contract basis by organizations that need direction in the development of new computer systems. These professionals are also sought out when system upgrades are warranted. Computer systems designers need to make sure that the organization?s investments in regards to information technology are paying off and those specific computing needs are being met. Computer systems designers consult with management to ensure agreement on system principles. They also read manuals, technical reports, and periodicals to learn how to develop programs that meet user and staff requirements. They also work closely with technology managers in regards to the design of systems and the purchase of hardware or software. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual income for a computer systems analyst in 2009 was $77,080.

Computer Programmer Job Opportunities for Information Technology Degree Graduates

Computer systems programmers use many of the same tools that application programmers utilize. They create platforms and programs with networking systems, and they design operating systems and other tools for the organization of data in scanners, printers, and workstations. Computer programmers perform or direct revision or expansion of programs to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. They also consult with managerial, technical, and engineering personnel to clarify the intent of programs and identify problems. Programmers fix problems and other difficulties that occur within systems, and they modify systems to make them operate more efficiently. These individuals will face slower than average job growth and will have an average salary similar to that of an applications programmer.

Technical Support Specialist Job Opportunities for Information Technology Degree Graduates

Technical support specialists will work on phone lines or help desks in order to provide advice and tech support to computer systems users. They are unlike help desk technicians in that they are not usually employed by the makers of the equipment people are asking assistance with. They may provide services to customers or to fellow employees within an organization. Technical support specialists maintain records of daily data communication transactions, problems, and remedial actions taken. They also install and perform repairs to software, hardware, or peripheral equipment. Those that work with customers generally work with their company?s software products or they can answer questions about new hardware purchases from their organization. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for a technical support specialist in 2009 was $44,300, and this career field will experience strong growth through 2014.

Children And Teens Are Increasingly Becoming Obese

This article has been viewed 20 times.

The steady rise in the incidence of childhood obesity in the US has continued to astound and baffle professionals in many areas of study. It certainly doesn?t help that large amounts of high fructose corn syrup are found in pretty much everything sold in the United States. That, though, is an issue best left for another day. One of the things that makes childhood obesity such a painful subject is that obese kids often seem like they haven?t been given an honest shot at life and that is a tragedy. These kids are already suffering the numerous consequences from arthritis and constant joint and back pain to Type II diabetes and the worst verbal treatment by their class peers. This is a sad state of affairs and we?ll explore it further in this article.

Type II diabetes is worth mentioning because it is up at the top of the list in terms of likelihood of occurring in kids, teens and even adults. Of course, it does make a certain sum of sense that it might happen. This specific kind of diabetes is different than Type I because it can be prevented sometimes. Risk factors for Type II diabetes include weight problems like obesity and a prolonged sedentary lifestyle. For those who are obese, their bodies are under a lot of extra pressure to produce more insulin. This is because there is more body there that needs to receive it. Then, as time goes on, the body starts to resist the insulin and that?s when Type II occurs. Widespread research has proven that kids who suffer from obesity are far more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than kids who aren?t obese. This is a condition that is quite serious because it actually blocks the child?s airway while he or she is sleeping. Kids who are overweight or suffer from obesity are more likely to have issues with snoring but that?s not as straightforward as it sounds, say the researchers who have been studying the problem. The reason for that is the snoring is sometimes a hidden symptom of OSA, obstructive sleep apnea. One possible approach that has been studied is using the procedure, adenotonsillectomy, to treat this condition in obese teens and younger children.

As you can guess, there is enormous social stigma attached to the obese child and teen. Going to school each day must be something along the lines of unbearable. The effects of prolonged teasing, hurtful comments and bullying can cause psychological scars that can be damaging for a person?s whole life. It is also important to note that each person is going to respond to this differently. Being obese has all sorts of problems and that means that it is very important that someone who has been or is still obese should get counseling so that they can better deal with the damage that has been done. Obese children and young adults can accurately be described as the walking wounded. This is because obesity ravages both the body and the mind.

Emilie Heymans joins Canada's all-time greats

Welcome to history, Emilie Heymans.

And take a seat alongside Marnie McBean and Kathleen Heddle as the greatest Canadian athletes in Summer Olympic history.

Four medals won in four Olympic Games will do that for the Quebec diver.

"I'm really happy that I'm able to win my fourth medal," she said afterwards.

It took her a moment or two to realize she and partner Jennifer Abel had won bronze in synchronized diving, but once she did, her arms were thrown into the air and the large Olympic smile never left her face.

When asked what it feels like to be an athlete who will be talked about forever, she first giggled and then said: "I'll see in a few years. We'll see if people are still talking about it. I hope that other athletes can have the same thing."

In terms of numbers, the most decorated Canadian Summer Olympian is long distance runner Phil Edwards, who was nicknamed "The Man of Bronze" after winning five bronze medals in three different Olympic Games. He won one medal in 1928, three in 1932 and a fifth bronze in the 1936 Olympics. The four medals by Heymans in four Olympics ? the second time she and a partner have been the leadoff medal for Canada, here and in Athens eight years ago ? may never be matched by another Canadian athlete.

But Abel, for one, would like to try.

This is her second Olympics and her first medal. She's only 20 years old. Her next Olympic competition pits her against Heymans ? and the rest of the world ? in a much more taxing event, the 3-metre springboard diving event that takes place over three days.

They don't talk through that competition. "She stays in her bubble and I stay in mine," said Abel.

But they don't have to worry about that until Friday. For now, they can enjoy the medal and all that comes with being Canada's first to the podium. History-making for Heymans, who almost certainly won't participate in a fifth Olympics. And this is a the big first step for Abel, who is all but certain to be back for Brazil in four years.

"I was nervous before the whole thing started," said Cesar Henderson, Abel's personal coach and one of the synchro coaches. "Diving is a sport all about nerves. One bad mistake and you're Olympics can be over. It's competition. It's every four years. You only have one shot.

?It?s the first day for diving here and we've got a medal. Today, it just went great for us.?

3 Key Elements To A Successful Real Estate e-Newsletter | Leading ...

While at one time considered ?tacky and dated?, the predominance of Social Media in the marketplace has once again given email marketing it?s chance to make it?s mark. Constant status updates, multiple social media property platforms, and a general sense of ?noise? on social networks has made email, specifically e-Newsletters, a great way to stay in front of your prospects and clients, give them value added and timely information, and keep you and your bran at the forefront of their minds, when it comes to Real Estate and their home buying and selling needs.

To those ends, I?ve put together three tips to consider when preparing a e-Newsletter for your clients and prospects:

1) Your content must be pertinent and compelling, and NOT ?salesy?

Much like my post last week about best practices with your social media marketing plan, content in your newsletters has to be useful, helpful and informative. You cannot use your newsletter as a vehicle for your latest pitch of why your prospects and clients need your services and should refer you to their family and friends.

Give your clients and prospects information that is pertinent to your marketplace. Comment on that information and give them your analysis. Establishing yourself? as a Real Estate expert will do far more for your success than telling people things like ?I?m the top 1%, your neighborhood expert, etc.? ever will.

2. Speak to people at their level to peak and keep their interest

With any Real Estate e-Newsletter, statistics are generally a good portion of the content. One pitfall we see time and time again, when examining an agent?s marketing efforts is the fact that they are not presenting statistics in a way that is understandable or interesting to their clients and prospects.

FACT: The average bear does not really understand statistics.

If you speak in terms that nobody can understand, or speak in a plain, uninteresting way, your prospects and clients are going to delete your newsletter.

Whether you are talking sales trends and statistics, describing a new listing, or talking about new legislation Congress is passing, BE INTERESTING. Put it in ?every man? terms the reader can easily understand. Put it in terms that your reader can relate to, specifically how what you are telling them relates specifically to them (after all, as humans, we are all selfish. Showing someone ?what?s in it for them? will never do you wrong).

3. Show your unique brand and let your personality shine

The last thing we see time an time again is when an agent uses a ?canned? newsletter as a marketing piece. DO NOT DO THIS.

Newsletters used in this fashion are the laziest form of marketing possible. If a prospect, or even worse a client happens to get the same newsletter from another agent, this will put you in a horrible light. You will not only be looked at as lazy, but also lose your credibility as a knowledgeable agent that specifically knows about your specific marketplace.

Obviously ?some? content from outside sources, such as newsletter services is helpful, but NEVER lean on 100% of that content. Craft your content to reinforce your brand position, showing your unique personality, your value proposition and your differentiating factors in the marketplace, compared to your competitors.

Any time you have to customize something, it takes time. Perhaps time you feel you do not have. I cannot though stress enough the fact that this time and effort will pay off tenfold.? Are you currious about other best practices for an e-Newsletter? Are you currently sending an e-Newsletter that isn?t getting ?pop? and you want to know why? Romney on London: 'I Tell People What ? I Believe'

JERUSALEM - Mitt Romney shrugged off the suggestion he would like a do-over on his controversial comments about the London Olympics, stating that he says what he "actually believes."

He added, however, that after two days of events the games' organization has been "picture perfect."

In a wide-ranging interview with ABC News, Romney talked about his bumpy trip through London as well as assessing his prospects for debating President Obama and his moment at the Western Wall.

So far the roughest moment on the Republican presidential candidate's road trip came after he said that some things about the Olympics were "disconcerting." That angered Brits, including the mayor of London.

"You know, I was referring to press reports before I even got to London that suggested that the organizing committee was having some challenges," said Romney.

"I was there for two days," he added. "The games were carried out without a hitch. So, as far as I'm able to tell, despite the challenges as any organizing committee faces, they were able to organize games that have been so far so good, picture perfect."

"I tend to tell people what I actually believe," said Romney when asked if he would want to change his words if he could go back and answer the questions again.

The Republican presidential candidate looked ahead to his two debates with Obama this fall. He said that while he has not held any practice debates, he knows that the president was "a very effective debater in the last round."

"There's a lot that we'll do at getting prepared for these debates with President Obama," said Romney. "I think, as you suggest, they'll be very important because the rhetoric will be met with response. And if there's ever been something which is said which is untrue, the truth will come out."

"I would expect [the president] to be very effective on the debate stage," said Romney. "I don't think that it will come down to a selection of words. I think it will come down to a selection of course. What is the path America wants to follow?"

Romney shared a story about a moment he had with his wife, Ann, before the couple visited one of the holiest sites in the Jewish religion today, the Western Wall. Romney revealed that he and Ann sat together and shared the prayers they placed in the Western Wall today.

"Yes, before we went to the wall we both sat down and wrote prayers, and you know I read to her what I had written and she read to me what she wrote," said Romney.

"My thoughts were in regards to peace, my family, my wife and the source of our salvation," he said.

Pirates?deal Astros club-record 12th straight loss

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:07 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

HOUSTON (AP) - Wandy Rodriguez was happy when his Pittsburgh debut was over, especially since it came against his former team.

Rodriguez pitched six innings, Rod Barajas hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and the Pirates rallied past Houston 4-3 on Saturday night, sending the Astros to their club-record 12th straight loss.

"It was hard, but I know I tried to concentrate and put the ball wherever I wanted and that's what I did all night," Rodriguez said. "I did not think a lot about, this is my old team."

Rodriguez allowed three runs and six hits with five walks and five strikeouts. The free-falling Astros, who have lost 25 of 27, traded the left-hander to Pittsburgh on Tuesday for three minor leaguers.

Rodriguez was 80-84 with a 4.04 ERA in eight seasons with the Astros. He holds the franchise record for strikeouts by a lefty with 1,093.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said it was a good debut for Rodriguez and he liked the pitcher's quick pace.

"All in all, I thought he navigated through traffic very well," Hurdle said. "I thought he was probably excited to get out there and pitch. I have never seen him walk five in a game all of the years I have watched him pitch. I'm sure he had some emotion or adrenaline."

Alex Presley and Neil Walker homered for Pittsburgh.

Barajas stopped an 0-for-18 slide with his key single off Fernando Rodriguez that scored Andrew McCutchen. The hit also ended an 0-for-17 streak with runners in scoring position for the Pirates.

"I haven't been clutch for a while," Barajas said. "I have had a lot of opportunities. I was starting to think the only way I can get a runner in from third base is a wild pitch. My last two runs that have scored when I was hitting were wild pitches. When you are struggling, you just want to figure out a way offensively to help the team out."

Chris Resop (1-3) earned the win with a scoreless seventh. Brad Lincoln pitched the eighth and Jason Grilli earned his second save.

Chuckie Fick (0-1) gave up a run and two hits in his first appearance with the Astros since being claimed off waivers Friday.

Houston lost 11 in a row in 1995.

"We can sit here and probably try to pick things apart as best we can on all kinds of issues," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "But we've been facing some good pitchers in tough situations. I think we saw Wandy pitch like that many times for us."

Wandy Rodriguez gave up all three runs and six hits in the first four innings.

Houston called up Armando Galarraga to make his first major league start since May 16, 2011, with Arizona. He allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits with five strikeouts in five-plus innings.

Galarraga said he was tired after his wife gave birth to their first child Friday night in Austin. He drove to Houston on Saturday.

"I didn't have my best sinker tonight, but I kept the game close," Galarraga said. "I need to show I can pitch again and contribute. There are a lot of new people and new faces around here with all the changes, but we need to keep it together and pitch well."

Walker put Pittsburgh up 2-1 in the fourth with a solo home run to right field.

Justin Maxwell put the Astros on top 3-2 in the fifth with a two-run triple off the right-field wall. That scored Jose Altuve and Matt Downs, who hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.

Pittsburgh tied it at 3 in the sixth when Garrett Jones scored on a passed ball, but squandered an opportunity for more after loading the bases with no outs. Pedro Alvarez hit a dribbler and Carlos Corporan stepped on the plate before throwing to first for a double play. After the passed ball, Barajas popped up to end the inning.

Presley gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead with a one-out homer to right off Galarraga. Jones hit a two-out triple to deep center that Maxwell initially caught but dropped after tripping on Tal's Hill, but Galarraga escaped further damage in the first by getting Walker to fly out.

Corporan tied the game at 1 with a single off Rodriguez that scored Maxwell, who led off the inning with a walk.

NOTES: Houston claimed INF Steve Pearce off waivers from Baltimore. Pearce will report to the Astros on Sunday. ... The Astros optioned LHP Fernando Abad to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Galarraga. They also sent RHPs Enerio Del Rosario and Aneury Rodriguez outright to Oklahoma City. ... The Pirates have homered in 18 straight road games. ... Pittsburgh will start RHP James McDonald (10-4, 3.15 ERA) in the finale of the four-game series Sunday against RHP Lucas Harrell (7-7, 4.07).

How summer thunderstorms could be punching new holes in the ozone layer (+video)

A study looking at conditions in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer resides, suggests a link between climate change and the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface.

Global warming could open new holes in Earth's ozone layer at latitudes that until now have seemed immune to the ozone destruction that recurs over Antarctica and the Arctic, a new study warns.

The underappreciated keys to this conundrum: water vapor and temperatures in the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer appears. Both, the researchers say, reach summertime values over the continental US known to encourage ozone-destroying chemicals that are already aloft to attack ozone.

The team makes no attempt to project when significant erosion might be expected to occur. And researchers have yet to make the measurements that would confirm that the reactions the study describes are occurring. Rather, it points to conditions that are appearing and are known to stimulate stratospheric ozone destruction.

The results suggest a clear link between climate change and the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface, says James Anderson, a Harvard atmospheric scientist and the lead author of the study, which appears in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

When people talk about global warming, "most people would have their backyard warmer than it is now," he says. But global warming "is not about that," he adds. "It's about these feedbacks that couple the system into irreversible paths forward. That's the primary concern."

At ground level, ozone is a pollutant ? a key element of smog. In the stratosphere, however, it shields organisms on Earth from destructively excessive levels of ultraviolet light from the sun.

The study by Dr. Anderson's team is based on well-established atmospheric chemistry and observations over the continental United States of an underappreciated character in the ozone story: summer thunderstorms.

In essence, the team found that thunderstorms and their powerful, convective updrafts drive unexpectedly large concentrations of water vapor high into the stratosphere. The high concentrations of water vapor alter conditions in ways that encourage ozone destruction when the man-made chemicals associated with ozone depletion are present.

If the frequency and intensity of mid-latitude storms increase with time, as some global-warming models suggest, Anderson and his colleagues say they are concerned that ozone destruction at mid-latitudes could become one of those irreversible feedbacks.

"This is a really important find to nail down," says Mary Barth, an atmospheric scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., noting that it begs for field measurements to see how valid the warning is and how widely any effect might reach.

Dr. Barth, who was not part of Anderson's team, and colleagues have just completed a field project gathering data on thunderstorms and their impact on atmospheric chemistry, including ozone reactions.

In fact, Anderson's team initially was working on another climate problem: the formation of cirrus clouds and their effect on climate. Clouds represent one of the big areas of uncertainty in climate models. And cirrus clouds can have a warming effect on climate by allowing sunlight through but trapping heat rising up from underneath. The tops of thunderheads are one source of cirrus clouds, which assume their feather-like appearance as high-altitude winds blow across the tops of the thunderheads, giving them their anvil shape.

Researchers have known that the most powerful thunderstorms, whose strong updrafts can punch through the boundary between the troposphere (where weather happens) and the stratosphere, can deposit large amounts of water vapor in the stratosphere. But Anderson's team was using high-altitude aircraft to measure water vapor rising the tops of a broader range of thunderstorms.

"We weren't hunting for big game here," he says. The aircraft were taking measurements from garden-variety summer thunderstorms over the Midwest and along the East Coast.

"To our huge surprise, we discovered that those convective storms were not simply distributing water in the upper troposphere," he says. Rather, they were lofting water vapor three to four miles into the stratosphere. Plumes often reached altitudes exceeding 60,000 feet.

Anderson had been deeply involved in studies of ozone depletion over Antarctica and the Arctic. What researchers learned about Arctic ozone depletion in particular triggered alarm bells. There, ozone depletion was all about the interplay between water vapor, temperature, the ozone-destroying compounds, and tiny particles known as sulfate aerosols ? which act as tiny platforms on which chemical reactions can occur.

As water-vapor concentrations rose, so did the temperature at which the ozone-eating reactions could begin to take place, suggesting that the temperatures and water vapor were the key controls.

Under commonly observed conditions of water vapor and aerosol concentrations, the temperature at which ozone-depleting reactions would take place is about minus 119 degrees F., the researchers explain. Double the amount of water vapor, and the temperature at which reactions start rises by about 10 degrees F., bringing it within the range of temperatures commonly found in the stratosphere during mid-latitude summers.

Anderson's team studied data from the continental US, but it notes that similar conditions may appear over other parts of the globe.

The study points to "the potential for a pretty significant effect on stratospheric ozone at latitudes where we normally wouldn't think that would happen," said Mario Molina, an atmospheric scientist at the University of California at San Diego who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995 with the late Frank Rowland. The two worked out the chemistry behind stratospheric ozone depletion and chlorofluorocarbons, once widely used as refrigerants and aerosol-spray propellants.

"Many ecological systems are quite sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and they have not evolved the repair mechanisms for more severe ozone depletion," Dr. Molina said in a prepared statement.

The 1987 Montreal Protocol and subsequent agreements have played important roles in halting production of key ozone-depleting chemicals, Anderson notes. But these compounds remain in the stratosphere for decades. Moreover, the sulfate aerosols there occur naturally: They are not affected by controls on sulfur emissions at ground level.

Without reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions ? especially carbon dioxide, which itself remains in the atmosphere for centuries ? ozone holes once limited to the poles could become regular summertime features over some of the most populated places on the planet, the team suggests.

With the Montreal Protocol, many people said in effect, problem solved ? let's move on, Anderson says, acknowledging that even he had dealt with ozone destruction and global warming as separate issues.

People "completely forgot about the remarkable dependence of the destruction of ozone on water and temperature," he says.

Zimbabwe power cuts to persist for 10 years: official

Energy-starved Zimbabwe will suffer longer and more frequent power shortages for the next 10 years, a senior official said Friday.

The country's power utility will extend blackouts until it can boost capacity, Patson Mbiriri, secretary for energy and power development, told an annual congress of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries.

"By 2022 that's when we will be able to generate enough power for domestic and industrial power," Mbiriri said.

Zimbabwe needs about 2,200 megawatts of electricity at peak consumption but generates just below 1,300 megawatts, while relying on imports to fill the gap.

Due to ageing equipment, power generation is often disrupted following breakdowns. In most cases, the generators operate below capacity.

In recent months, Zimbabwe could only afford to import 25 megawatts from nearby countries after major electricity suppliers in the region turned off the switches over non-payment of dues.

"Most of our woes in terms of blackouts will end in 2015," Mbiriri said.

Energy Minister Elton Mangoma recently said Zimbabwe has whittled its debt to power providers to under $20 million from around $100 million in a bid to resume imports.

There are plans to revamp the northern Kariba hydro-power station and the Hwange thermal power station in the west of the country.

DuPont earnings fall on weak volumes

DOVER, Del. (AP) ? The DuPont Co.'s net income fell 3 percent in the second quarter as sales volumes fell in several business units, including performance chemicals, electronics, and safety and protection, and it absorbed charges for claims over a weed killer and a legal settlement.

Revenue rose 7 percent but fell short of Wall Street's expectations.

The company said it expects its earnings for the year to be at the low end of its current outlook in part because of uncertainty about the macroeconomic outlook.

"I think the wild card is just the global economy and what happens in Europe and what goes on in the next quarter or two," said Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau.

DuPont's shares closed down 97 cents, or 2 percent, at $47.74.

The Wilmington, Del.-based company said net income totaled $1.18 billion, or $1.25 per share, for the three months ending June 30, down from $1.22 billion, or $1.29 per share, for the same period last year.

Excluding one-time items, earnings came to $1.48 per share, which beat Wall Street estimates of $1.46 per share, according to a survey by FactSet.

The company took a pretax charge of $265 million in the quarter related to claims involving the use of its Imprelis weed killer, and a $137 million pretax charge related to the settlement of a lawsuit with Invista, a privately held company that bought much of DuPont's textiles and interiors business several years ago.

Revenue totaled $11 billion, up from $10.26 billion for the second quarter of 2011 but below analysts' expectations of about $11.27 billion. The increase was attributed to 6 percent higher local prices and a 5 percent increase from portfolio changes, partially offset by a 3 percent currency headwind and 1 percent lower volume.

Volume declines in certain business segments were offset by continued strong performance in agriculture, where sales increased 13 percent to $3.4 billion, reflecting 7 percent price and 6 percent volume gains. Sales were up 12 percent in the Pioneer seed unit, with strong performance in North America corn and soybeans. Crop protection sales increased 15 percent.

DuPont also saw big gains in the industrial biosciences and nutrition and health units related to its acquisition of the enzyme and specialty food ingredients businesses of Danisco.

"Our agriculture, food and bioscience businesses are performing exceptionally well globally, and our advanced materials businesses are achieving solid results despite slower growth in some key markets and continued weakness in Europe," said DuPont CEO and chairwoman Ellen Kullman.

Sales were down 2 percent in Europe, Middle East and Africa, as volume in the region dropped 8 percent.

Volume was down 10 percent in the second quarter in the performance chemicals unit, reflecting continued softness in demand for titanium dioxide, or TiO2, a whitening pigment used in wide range of products, from automotive and house paints to toothpaste.

Despite short-term weakness in demand for TiO2, Kullman told analysts the overall fundamentals in the market are "robust." She said recent comments in the media about the outlook for titanium dioxide overstated softness in the market.

DuPont chief financial officer Nick Fanandakis said the company was still "very bullish" on the mid- and long-term prospects for titanium dioxide, a key profit producer for the company.

Sales in the electronics and communications unit were down 11 percent on 6 percent lower volume and 5 percent lower selling prices as DuPont saw continued soft demand for photovoltaic materials. Volume decline in photovoltaics was partially offset by increased demand for smartphones and tablets, the company said.

DuPont's safety and protection unit saw a 4 percent drop in sales, with 5 percent lower volume partially offset by 1 percent higher selling prices. The company said volume declined because of lower public sector demand for products such as Kevlar body armor and continued softness in industrial markets.

DuPont maintained its earnings outlook for the year of $4.20 to $4.40 per share, excluding unusual items. But the company said Tuesday that it expects full-year earnings to be near the lower end of that range because of uncertainties regarding macroeconomic conditions and a higher tax rate related to its earnings mix.

3 Fiddles Farm, Bridger Canyon, Montana

On Saturday July 21, the Bike to Farm (click here to get the info)?gang rode up the Bridger Canyon to 3 Fiddles Farm. ?Week two of the Bike to Farm?rides brought in more riders and we enjoyed the sights and hills of riding up the canyon on a great day. ?3 Fiddles Farm is about 10 miles from town and sits at about 5,500 feet in elevation.

The owners of the farm are Matt and Karin Broughton, and this is the same farm that Justene and I volunteer at in trade for knowledge and some fresh food. ?Knowing that Karin and Matt are awesome farmers and so full of knowledge about the science of growing good food and the difference between organic and poisonous food and how poisonous food is being linked back to an accumulative amount of health problems and how supporting the local economy by way of eating locally grown food will improve not only the local?(and national)?economy but cure more than half those accumulative health problems and solve a ton of environmental problems at the same time,,,,, and cost us (the so called vote) less money, ?is something that Justene and I are sure will make an amazing farm tour. (thanks for blowing our minds again M & K)

After the brief introduction of bikers to farmers, the Broughtons lead us out in their immaculate field of 240 varieties of vegetables; including patches with 7,000 bulbs of garlic, 28 varieties of tomatoes, 22 kinds of peppers, perfect rows of onions, carrots, peas, kale, lettuce,,,,,, ?It's enough to make a full man hungry, and in the middle of all this "here's how you grow good food, and grow good food well, and how it's changed our lives and can change your life too.... people started to get this feeling of, "wow, this is awesome."

Standing there I ?really began to think about the weight of the words Matt and Karin were saying; and this was not the first time I've heard them both get going about the local food issue, and how it relates to everything greener in our world today. ?In fact I love it when either one them starts talking passionately about food and farming and all the bull-stack (big ag. dirty governments, and the shit storms of Monsanto) going on in the world. ?This is one of the reason the Sweet-Bangss get along so well with the Broughtons; we like to speak the same language. ?For us, Justene and I are so happy to have friends like Karin and Matt and we know how fortunate we are to be able to get a working education from them as well.

As I stood there considering how much local food I consume I started to think, wow I'm not at all a locavore. ?But that would be awesome if I was, or if even half the food I eat was locally sourced. Even though I know food comes from farms and not made in the grocery store, I don't know who grows the food I eat, and this idea of really getting to know my farmer seemed to start to sink in.

Smart and obvious, the idea that the person growing my food should be someone I know made me feel funny inside. ?Is this how disconnect to our food we really are? When the idea of meeting the people that grow the food we eat, is a little funny, and strange. ?Why should I meet my farmer? I ask myself.

If not for anything else than, maybe because I need to heal my relationship with food. This relationship to food is also my relationship to the world around me and the environment, it's also the relationship I have to myself; the insides of myself, my health, my fitness level, and my peace of mind (or lack there of). Simply knowing where my food comes from, and knowing it's fresh and poison free doesn't sound like a difficult thing when I start to think about things a little. ?Trouble is, with all the distractions in daily life, (tabloids, bike races, personal dramas, jobs, money,,, and buying things I don't need) my thoughts get stolen away from how sexy fresh veggies are. ?Round and curvaceous, veggies are the sexiest foods available. ?They're alive and colourful, yet I forget about them all the time, as I pass by billboard after billboard of fast food and fake superstars.

Thanks to everyone who came out for last weeks ride. ?We'll keep doing this as long as we have your support. ?Thanks Bozeman.....
