STORRS, Conn. (AP) ? Syracuse found another way to win Saturday night, and in the process secured the Big East regular-season championship.
Fab Melo's follow-up dunk with 31 seconds left lifted the second-ranked Orange to a 71-69 win over Connecticut. C.J. Fair blocked a shot by Roscoe Smith just before the buzzer to preserve the victory for Syracuse, which has won nine in a row since its only loss of the season Jan. 21 at Notre Dame.
Kris Joseph had 21 points to lead the Orange (29-1, 16-1 Big East).
Jeremy Lamb had 19 points, and Andre Drummond added 17 points and 14 rebounds for UConn (17-11, 7-9), which overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to tie the game with 47 seconds to go.
"This was a big character win, because we didn't have the momentum for the last 5 minutes and everything was going right for them," said Fair. "For us to come up with a win like this is big."
The win was the first for Syracuse at Gampel Pavilion, where the Orange had been 0-4.
Scoop Jardine made a layup with 9:55 left to give Syracuse a 60-49 lead, but Connecticut responded with a 14-3 run to tie it at 63 with 4:18 to go. Ryan Boatright started the spurt with a layup and Drummond finished it with a rebound basket and a fast-break layup.
The Orange led 69-65 with 2:12 remaining when Drummond got free for a dunk and then tipped in Boatright's miss to leave it tied again with 47 seconds left.
"We should have won that game," Drummond said. "We had a couple of tough plays down the stretch and they made their shots. At the end of the game, we didn't get the foul call that we were looking for."
Syracuse led 46-29 early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Joseph, but UConn began chipping away. A 3-point shot from Boatright cut that to single digits, and a behind-the-back pass from Shabazz Napier to Lamb led to a three-point play with 11:53 left that cut the deficit to 56-49.
Drummond followed Smith's miss with a layup that cut the lead to 63-61 and then took a pass from Napier from beyond halfcourt and tied the game with just more than 4 minutes left.
Melo's dunk off a miss by Fair gave Syracuse the winning margin despite protests from UConn's bench that Melo touched the ball while it was in the cylinder.
"The referees let us decide it, they let us play, they didn't call no touch fouls and it's just great to play in this conference," Joseph said.
Syracuse took control of the first half early. Joseph, who had 12 points before the break, went on his own 7-0 run to give Syracuse a 12-6 lead. The Orange extended that to 25-10 after a 13-0 run that was keyed when James Southerland blocked a flying dunk attempt by Drummond.
The Orange led 43-29 at halftime.
"We need to just improve on when you get a team down, keep 'em down," said Joseph.
The Orange beat the Huskies 85-67 in Syracuse two weeks ago, shooting a season-high 59 percent from the floor. They shot just under 44 percent in this one, and only 34.5 percent in the second half.
Syracuse has won five of the last six meetings between the teams.
Connecticut is 5-5 without coach Jim Calhoun this season, including a 3-4 mark during his current medical leave for spinal stenosis. The Hall of Fame coach also sat out the team's first three Big East games under an NCAA-imposed suspension stemming from recruiting violations.
Calhoun has surgery scheduled for Monday, but told The Associated Press that he is hoping he can recover enough to return to the bench in time for the season finale against Pittsburgh on March 3. The Huskies had won two of their last three games, but have just five wins since Jan. 1.
The Huskies came into the game rated No. 24 in the RPI and hoping a strong close to the season would be enough to give them an opportunity to defend their national championship in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies travel to Providence on Tuesday.
Boeheim earned his 885th victory, third on the career list and 15 ahead of Calhoun, who is in sixth place.

Energy giant ExxonMobil was fined ?2.8m for failing to report carbon dioxide emissions from its Mosmorran chemical plant in Fife, it has emerged.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said there had been no direct environmental impact.
The fine, believed to be the biggest ever in the UK, dates to 2010 but the details have only just been published.
ExxonMobil said it regretted the errors, which were reported as soon as they were identified.
In its 2008 report to Sepa the company failed to account for 33,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from its ethylene plant in Mosmorran and Sepa issued the fine in 2010.
Details only came to light in a report published by Sepa last week.
The agency said the penalty was a mandatory consequence of breaching the EU emissions trading scheme.

Sepa said the fine was a civil penalty and it was not required to carry out an investigation or report the matter to the procurator fiscal.
WWF Scotland's director Richard Dixon said: "You would assume that Exxon are now very careful to report the right data but this massive fine is a big message to others to get it right."

He was hospitalized twice for dehydration and malnutrition. He had stopped bathing. He wore the same tattered and fetid clothing. He smelled. These are the types of haunting stories we will hear more of. People dying, unnecessary deaths, some lonely, because of overburdened, underfunded and hamstrung government. There?s less and less funding and more and more elderly.
Older adults prefer to remain in their homes and communities, but it becomes more difficult as we age.
So what Do We Have to Offer? We fund, through the Older Americans Act and with a little bit of state funding:
However, we currently have over 4,000 on the Wait List for Aging services. But this is not an accurate number because providers stopped adding people to the lists.
Health and Human Services has over 400 on their CLTC Wait list for Home and Community Based Services and they removed 600 Medicaid Nursing Home beds. No longer do loved ones have to be placed within 50 miles of a spouse or family member.
These are all Government Services.
We said SC places a lower per capita tax burden on its residents. However, if citizens move to South Carolina primarily because of its low taxes, do they also expect the same amount of services that were present in their home state? And, if these services are not available, are they willing to accept higher taxes to pay for them?
What do we do?

So, are we getting what we asked for?
? What happens to our senior population with no caregiver?
Caregivers ? ?Out-migration?

No access to Nursing Home beds
What does it cost us? The range of aging services ? home-delivered meals, personal care, adult day services, etc. ? that help seniors remain in their home costs less than $1,000 dollars per individual per year. In contrast, persons in Medicaid-paid nursing home beds cost taxpayers anywhere from $25,000 to $37,000 per year. Private pay is about $65,000 per year. About a third of nursing home residents pay all of their nursing home costs from their own funds.

Many of our state officials are new to their jobs and many state agencies have new Directors. They also have less staff due to budget cuts. Educate as many legislators as possible so they can make informed decisions with the dollars they appropriate. Ask them if our seniors are a priority?
Put pressure on state policymakers to redefine the way LTSS are financed and delivered.
Redirect funds towards Home and Community Based Services instead of institutional services.
We, the LGOA, have asked the Legislature for an additional $5 million for HCBS. This investment can potentially save the state expenditures of more than $30 million in delayed or prevented nursing home admissions over the next few years.
Should government care for seniors not able to care for their own needs?
Are we comfortable with seniors going to bed at night hungry? Are we willing to say this is OK?
Are we comfortable knowing some seniors are isolated with no caregiver, no access to basic food needs, no access to medications?
If you say no this, then we need to fund these basic services.
If you think this is acceptable, then say, ?I don?t want to fund senior services. Let everyone take care of their own needs? but don?t be surprised or outraged or look to blame an agency or group when there are bad outcomes. Without proper funding, bad outcomes are expected.
Federal and State government cannot be the sole funding sources for these services.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Don Cornelius was cremated at a private service attended by family and family who were led in prayer by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the "Soul Train" founder's family announced Friday.
Jackson led the gathering in prayer during the service, which was held at the same cemetery where Michael Jackson and other celebrities are interred.
"The Rev. Jackson and my father were very, very close friends and I wouldn't have it any other way," Cornelius' son Tony wrote in a statement.
Cornelius' family is also planning a larger private memorial for next week, during which he will be eulogized by Jesse Jackson.
The popular host killed himself Feb. 1 with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had in recent years faced health problems and divorced his wife after a fight with her led him to plead no contest to spousal battery.
Since his death, Cornelius has been honored around the country by fans and celebrities alike. "Soul Train" showcased legendary artists such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. It brought the best R&B, soul and hip-hop acts to TV and had teenagers dance to their music.
Cornelius was honored Saturday with public celebrations in Harlem and Chicago, where he founded "Soul Train" in 1970. The show became one of the longest-running syndicated shows in history, introducing audiences to many top music acts and providing a never-before-seen TV platform for black culture.
