Puerto Rican woman kills man after Facebook fight

(AP) ? Police in Puerto Rico say a 27-year-old woman is suspected of killing her boyfriend after he became upset about her activities on Facebook.

Lt. Candido Pagan says there were two children in the house when the killing occurred Saturday morning: a nearly 2-month-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. Pagan says both belonged to suspect Wilnilia Sanchez Falcon, but it's unclear if they witnessed the killing in the central mountain town of Comerio.

Pagan says Sanchez is expected to be charged in the death of 25-year-old Jesus Rivera Algarin, who was stabbed in the torso. The lieutenant provided no information about what Sanchez may have posted on her Facebook account to upset Rivera.

He says Sanchez didn't have a criminal history but Rivera was charged with domestic violence in 2010.

America's Next Top Model College Edition: Cycle 19, Episode 6 :: The Girl Who Gets Pwn'd

This week on America's Next Top Model College Edition (Cycle 19, Episode 6), the girls embody steampunk after performing in a live action video game. Read Kidzworld?s recap of ?The Girl Who Gets Pwn?d,? which aired on September 28, 2012, to discover what you missed.

One Wrong Step

After last week?s shocking elimination of front runner Leila, the remaining girls are all on their guard. The new scoring system makes it so that no one?s spot in the competition is secure. Brittany, who wound up in the bottom two last week, strives for the number one spot this week. Unfortunately, with Laura thriving, she?ll have to settle for number two.

Video Game

For their weekly challenge, the girls participate in the filming of a live action video game, complete with body suits and motion sensers. Yvonne doesn?t understand what this has to do with modeling, and she has no hesitation expressing her feelings. Her idea of a glamorous life as a model has been squashed by all the long days and boring waits during photo shoots.

Steampunk

While Brittany received a good score for her performance in the challenge (an 8), Laura took the number one spot with a 9. She received the challenge win and the $10,000 scholarship money. Later the girls went to their photo shoot, where they embodied the steampunk style - Victorian clothes meets 19th century mechanics.

Elimination

The judges loved Laura?s photo, giving her straight 10?s across the board. Even Kelly ?Cutthroat? Cutrone laid on the compliments pretty thick. Naturally, she received best photo for the week. Brittany played second fiddle again. But it was Victoria?s dwindling talent and Yvonne?s bad attitude that landed them in the bottom two. Ultimately, the total scores kept Victoria in the competition by around 1 point and Yvonne was sent home.

Have Your Say

Do you think Yvonne deserved to be eliminated because of her bad attitude? Tell us in our comment section below!

US drops Iranian opposition group from terror list

NEW YORK (AP) ? The U.S. has removed from its terrorism list an Iranian militant group formerly allied with Saddam Hussein.

The State Department says the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq hasn't committed terrorism for more than a decade. It credits the group for peacefully leaving its paramilitary base near Iraq's Iranian border.

The decision is effective Friday. Any assets the MEK holds in the U.S. are no longer blocked. Americans may do business with it.

Officials told reporters about the decision last week, ahead of a court-ordered Oct. 1 deadline.

Delisting the MEK infuriates Iran. It accuses the group of continued terrorism.

The MEK helped Islamic clerics overthrow the shah before turning against the Iranian government. It fought in the 1980s alongside Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war but disarmed after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Researchers investigate aggression among kindergartners

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Not all aggressive children are aggressive for the same reasons, according to Penn State researchers, who found that some kindergartners who are aggressive show low verbal abilities while others are more easily physiologically aroused. The findings suggest that different types of treatments may be needed to help kids with different underlying causes for problem behavior.

"Aggressive responses to being frustrated are a normal part of early childhood, but children are increasingly expected to manage their emotions and control their behavior when they enter school," said Lisa Gatzke-Kopp, assistant professor of human development and family studies. "Kids who don't do this well, who hit their classmates when they are frustrated or cause other types of disturbances in the classroom, are at especially high risk for long-term consequences including delinquency, violence, dropping out of school, abusing substances and even suicide. Research tells us that the earlier we can intervene, the better the chances of getting these children back on track."

Gatzke-Kopp and her colleagues, who include Mark Greenberg, professor of human development and family studies and of psychology, asked each of the kindergarten teachers in all 10 of the elementary schools in Pennsylvania's Harrisburg School District to rate the aggressive behaviors of their students on a six-point scale with items such as "gets in many fights" and "cruelty, bullying or meanness to others." Using these data, the team recruited a group of high-risk children (207 children) and a group of low-risk children (132 children) to undergo a range of neurobiological measures aimed at understanding how aggressive children experience and manage emotions differently than their non-aggressive classmates.

The team assessed all of the children's cognitive and academic skills using standardized tests that identified the children's developmental level of vocabulary, spatial reasoning and memory. In addition, the team asked teachers to provide ratings of each child's behaviors, including their levels of aggression, disobedience and sadness, as well as their social skills and level of self-control in the classroom.

The researchers also assessed the children's brain functioning using a mobile research laboratory they brought to the schools. Within the mobile lab, the team measured the children's heart rate and skin conductance activity during tasks designed to elicit emotional responses, including showing the children short video clips of a cartoon character in a variety of situations depicting fear, sadness, happiness and anger. The researchers wanted to understand how emotional and physical arousal to different types of emotions differed between children who engage in aggressive behavior and children who don't engage in aggressive behavior, as well as how different children who engage in aggressive behavior react.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, the assessments enabled the researchers to understand how cognitive and emotional processing may contribute to the development of aggressive tendencies. Specifically, the team found that 90 percent of the aggressive kids in the study could be characterized as either low in verbal ability or more easily physiologically aroused. The results will appear in the August 2012 issue of Development and Psychopathology.

"What we may be seeing is that there are at least two different routes through which a child may act aggressively," Gatzke-Kopp said. "Because these are very different processes, these children may need different approaches to changing their behavior."

The first group of kids was characterized by lower verbal ability, lower levels of cognitive functioning and fewer executive function skills.

According to Gatzke-Kopp, children need verbal skills to understand the feelings of others and guidance from adults, and to express feelings without hitting. They also need adequate cognitive and executive-function abilities to manipulate information and to think of alternatives to hitting and fighting.

"This group of kids may be functioning at a cognitive level that is more akin to a preschooler than a kindergartner," Gatzke-Kopp said. "They have a harder time extracting what other people are feeling. They don't have a nuanced sense of emotions; everything is either happy or sad to them. So they might not be as good at recognizing how their behavior is making another child feel. They may literally have a hard time 'using their words,' so hitting becomes an easier solution when they are frustrated."

The second group of kids had good verbal and cognitive functioning, but they were more physiologically aroused. They were more emotionally reactive, and tended to have more stressors in their lives.

"These children may be able to tell you that if somebody pushed them on the playground they would go get a teacher, but the push happens and they kind of lose it and it doesn't matter what they should do, they just act on impulse," Greenberg said. "One possibility is that the threshold for managing frustration is quite low for these kids. So what we might consider a minor annoyance to them is a major threat. When they are calm they function very well, but when they lose control of their emotions, they can't control their behavior."

In the future, the team plans to examine how these different types of children respond to an intervention delivered over the second half of kindergarten and the first half of first grade.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health funded this research. Other authors of the paper include Christine Fortunato, postdoctoral fellow, and Michael Coccia, statistical consultant, both in the Penn State Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development.

Why are journals so expensive?

This morning, at minute 48 of a 50 minute information literacy session for an introductory biology class, a student asked me one of those seemingly innocuous questions,

?Why are journals so expensive??

We had spend the past 45 minutes talking about the scientific literature: what is peer review, what is a primary research article, and what happens after an article is published. I took two minutes to discuss finding journal articles and I gave my standard spiel about why students should use inter-library loan instead of paying for journal articles we don?t have: hundreds of thousands of your tuition dollars already pay databases and journal subscriptions. If we don?t already have a copy of the article you need in another database, we can borrow it from another library more cheaply than you can buy it online ? free to you, low cost to us. Besides, the journal publishers don?t need more of your money. Journal subscriptions are much more expensive than magazine subscriptions ? hundreds or thousands of dollars a year for just one journal.

The students? eyes went wide at the last statement about the cost of journal subscriptions. You can get a year of People for just $100, or a year of Scientific American for only $25. So why does a library subscription to the Journal of Co-ordination Chemistry (24 issues per year) cost $11,367 per year?

I believe this graph of journal costs over the years is mandatory for any blog post, presentation or article that discusses journal prices. Here it is. The yellow dotted line is the consumer price index. The top red line is journal costs. From ARL.

Since I had about 90 seconds to provide some kind of answer to this question, my mind quickly raced through the details of the ?serials crisis,? distinctions between journal prices for STM and humanities journals, the rise of the for-profit publisher after World War II, open access mandates and everything else.

In the end, I told the student there were two main reasons why publishers charge so much for journal subscriptions:

  1. The subscription isn?t just for one person, it is so that everyone at the university could (theoretically) read that content
  2. Because they can.

Journals have content (articles, reviews) that scholars and students want. Due to the nature of academic publishing, that exact same content (the results from a particular study or experiment) can?t be found in another journal. These mini-monopolies put power in the hands of publishers as scientists and scholars need access to particular content.

It?s kind of like the way that HBO can control its subscription price. If you want to watch Game of Thrones, you have to subscribe to HBO. You may get it via Time Warner or Direct TV, but HBO can still set the price. The major difference here is that unlike TV shows for entertainment purposes, some scholarly content can be considered vital to the educational and research mission of a college, making it difficult to say NO to.

This may be changing. There have been several high profile cases of libraries saying NO to high priced journal content (more on that next time), and researchers are more aware than ever of the repercussions of publishing in expensive journals. Hopefully this will lead to a greater balance of power between scholarly publishers and the institutions that purchase their content.

Bahraini court jails daughter of imprisoned activist

DUBAI (Reuters) - The daughter of an imprisoned Bahraini activist was jailed for two months on Wednesday for tearing up a picture of the Gulf Arab state's king, her lawyer said.

Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in turmoil since pro-democracy protests led by its Shi'ite Muslim majority erupted last year and were put down by the Sunni rulers.

Zainab al-Khawaja, daughter of leading Shi'ite activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, was arrested at a protest in August that was dispersed by security forces using tear gas and birdshot.

Her defense lawyer called the sentence harsh.

"Usually sentences for such crimes are just fines," Mohammed al-Jishi told Reuters by telephone from Manama.

Jishi said she faced eight more charges related to participating in protests. The next court hearing is on October 4.

Her father went on a hunger strike for more than three months earlier this year to protest against his imprisonment.

The ruling Al Khalifa family used martial law and help from Gulf neighbors to put down last year's uprising, but unrest has resumed.

Protesters and police clash almost daily and Washington has called on its ally to talk to the opposition.

Bahraini authorities accuse regional Shi'ite power Iran of encouraging the unrest and has vowed a tough response to violent protests as talks with the opposition have stalled.

Earlier this month, a Bahraini court upheld jail sentences of up to 25 years against leaders of last year's uprising.

Get The Most From Your Auto Insurance In Michigan- hodc.net

? Good To Know ? Get The Most From Your Auto Insurance In Michigan

Many Americans report that shopping for auto insurance, and the decision of which company and which policy to choose, can often be extremely stressful. Companies can vary tremendously in terms of their coverage of claims, availability, and service, and with so many options available, how do you know which is the right choice for you?
?
Think twice about hitting another car on purpose because of your road rage. Not controlling yourself on the road can void your auto insurance when your insurer finds out about it. It is common for an insurer to refuse liability coverage to any drivers who purposely injure someone else, another vehicle or property when they see intent.
?
When considering auto insurance for a young driver in MI, be sure to consider building up his or her credit, prior to shopping for insurance. This will not only assist with the new driver being able to get a possible better rate, but will also help when the young person may need other large purchases or loans in the future.
?
You should be talking to your insurance agents before you even decide on a car. This is because the insurance should influence which models of car you are looking at. Some cars have a surcharge that will increase your policy price, but others come with discounts. See which options come with a discount and then consider if these cars would suit you.
?
Don?t forget to inquire about special discounts when you are purchasing an auto insurance policy. Discounts are usually based on risk, and if you are a lesser risk to the insurer, they may lower your premium. Discounts may be given if you?ve had a good driving record, have an anti-theft device installed in your vehicle, or if you?ve taken courses on safe driving. Check with your agent to see if you qualify for any of these, or any other discount that might be available.
?
It is in the best interest of any driver to know the financial requirements for any vehicle in terms of auto insurance. Financing companies sometimes have additional insurance coverage requirements for those that are financing a vehicle. These requirements can affect your deductible, so be sure to make note of them.
?
If you really want to get the best deal in auto insurance, take good care of your car and keep it for a very long time! A well-cared for older car will serve you well, and your insurance rates will just keep going down. The more often you change cars, the more expense you can expect in everything from insurance, to payments and taxes.
?
When you purchase a new car, you should keep your insurance rates in mind and look for the best safety features you can get. Safer cars are cheaper to insure. Because insurance companies are responsible for medical liability, they will charge a lower premium for safe cars that minimize injuries in an accident.
?
Your goal is to get cheap auto insurance in MI, but what exactly does that mean? By carefully considering the various factors involved, such as the amount of coverage you need, as well as the amount you want your deductible set at, among other factors, you are well on your way to making this important decision.

Thousands of striking teachers rally in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) ? Thousands of striking Chicago public school teachers and their allies packed a city park Saturday in a boisterous show of force as union leaders and the district tried to work out the details of an agreement that could end a week-long walkout.

Pushing strollers, toting signs and towing wagons of children, thousands of red-shirted teachers cheered and chanted as speaker after speaker urged them to stand firm until they have a deal in writing. They told the teachers that their strike was a symbol of hope for public teachers and other unions that have been losing ground around the nation.

"I'm pretty confident that something will come together that both sides will agree on," said Ramses James, a sixth-grade math teacher. "I believe this is a very strong turning point when you have so many people coming out to fight alongside (the teachers union). That means a lot."

Months of contract negotiations came down to two main issues: job security and union opposition to a new teacher evaluation process the union felt was too heavily weighted on student test scores.

Union leaders who announced a framework for a deal on Friday said they would not end the strike ? the first in Chicago in 25 years ? until they see a proposal in writing. Saturday's talks were aimed at settling on the exact language, and Chicago Teachers Union delegates will meet Sunday to review a proposed contract and vote on whether to suspend the strike.

If the majority of the nearly 800 delegates agree with the proposed pact, students will return to the classroom Monday.

Late Saturday, the union said it would present to its members a three-year contract that included a raise in each year and creates a hiring pool with the goal of giving half of open jobs to laid-off teachers. The contract also includes a new evaluation procedure based in part on student test scores, but teachers can appeal their ratings, the union said. The district and union have the option of extending the contract into a fourth year.

Addressing demonstrators Saturday, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis cautioned that "we are on strike" and that classes won't resume until the delegates see an agreement they can support.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson also addressed the crowd, saying the strike was a "struggle for working people everywhere" and that there was still a long road to ensuring all residents of the city have equal access to quality schools, especially in neighborhoods beset by gang violence and poverty.

"Our mission is very clear: we fight for equal, high-quality public education for all," Jackson said. "When school opens again there will be 160 schools without a public library. ... When school opens again, there will be schools yet without books. So we fight today for schools on the South and West Side to look like schools on the North Side."

Saturday's talks took place at the offices of union attorney Robert Bloch. On his way into the talks, Chicago Teachers Union Vice President Jesse Sharkey was optimistic that timetable was still possible.

"We're hopeful that we can do it but frankly like I said, the devil is in the details of this contract and we want it in writing," he told reporters. "We're going to go in today and hammer (out) the details."

Union members from Wisconsin, Minnesota and elsewhere joined Saturday's rally in show of solidarity. For Wisconsin teachers, the rally also served as a moment to celebrate a judge's Friday ruling striking down nearly all of a contentious state law championed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker that had effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most public workers.

Walker's administration immediately vowed to appeal, while unions, which have vigorously fought the law, declared victory.

"People are energized by this," said Marty Horning, a high school social studies teacher from Milwaukee who came to the rally with a busload of others. "I think that the line has to be drawn in terms of teacher bashing, union bashing and privatization of education. These forces and factors are not just in Chicago, not just in Wisconsin, but across the nation and (Chicago) happens to be the spear point."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has blasted the union for engaging in a "strike of choice," sounded optimistic Friday, saying "the tentative framework is an honest and principled compromise that is about who we all work for: the students."

The walkout in the nation's third-largest school district canceled five days of class for more than 350,000 public school students who had just returned from summer vacation.

Until this week, Chicago teachers had not walked out since 1987, when they were on strike for 19 days.

Duke Energy And Exelon Better Dividend Plays Than Southern Company

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. (More...)

Business relationship disclosure: The article has been written by Qineqt's Utilities Analyst. Qineqt is not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). Qineqt has no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Southern company (SO) pays an annualized dividend of $1.96 per share, which means a dividend yield of 4.3%, below its competitors. Duke Energy (DUK) and Exelon Corp (EXC) are better than Southern because of cheaper valuations and a higher dividend yield. Southern has been issuing common equity to generate cash, which is leading to EPS dilution.

Southern Company is one of the largest electricity generators and distributers in the U.S. It is primarily engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. It operates through different entities, which include Georgia Power, Alabama Power, Mississippi Power and Gulf Power. It also owns the Southern Power Company. Georgia Power's revenue contribution to total revenue was highest in 2Q2012 (47%). Southern Power has the highest profit margin (16.4%).

Source: 2Q Earnings release and Qineqt s estimates.

Southern Company reported revenues of $4.18 billion for 2Q2012, down 7.5% YoY. It reported EPS of 69 cents for the recent quarter, down 2.8% YoY, whereas its competitor Duke Energy's EPS increased by 3% for the same period. Second quarter earnings were slightly above the earnings estimate of 68 cents. Earnings for the quarter were down due to near normal weather in 2Q2012, as compared to unusual warm weather in the corresponding period last year. The earnings for Q32012 are expected to be up 4.5% YoY and annual EPS for fiscal year 2012 are expected to be up by 0.5%-5% YoY.

Total retail sales were down 1.9% YoY. In retail, commercial sales has the highest contribution with a ~35% share, followed by Industrial with ~33% and residential with 31.5%. In the first six months of 2012, operating companies added 20,000 new residential customers.

In recent years, the industry has been experiencing a change in inputs used for production of electricity "coal to gas switching" in the U.S. Natural gas usage for electricity generation has been increasing due to a fall in its price in recent times. Coal usage has been criticized for electricity generation input due to its adverse impact on the environment and nuclear power generation being considered unsafe. Southern has also been increasing its dependence on natural gas to take advantage of low gas prices - in the first half of 2012, share for gas was 46% as compared to 28% in the corresponding period last year.

Source: investor.southerncompany.com

Southern has been working on the construction of Plant Ratcliffe, a coal-based generating plant, which would be operational in 2014. The company has also been working on nuclear plant Vogtle 3&4, with an estimated cost of $6.2 billion; based on 2016 and 2017 service dates, the cost for the project is expected to increase by $87 million. The company might have to face criticism on its nuclear facility construction, as it is considered unsafe; concerns regarding nuclear facilities have been on a rise since the nuclear facility accident in Japan.

Currently, the company offers a dividend yield of 4.3% and an annual dividend rate of $1.96 per share. Southern has been paying continuous dividends in the last 259 quarters, and in the last 11 years, dividends have been increasing. Dividends paid by the company were not backed by free cash flows; rather, the company has been issuing common equity to generate cash. Common shares outstanding have increased by ~16% in the last five years, from 756 million in 2007 to 875 million by 30 June, 2012. If the company keeps on issuing shares to generate cash, it will lead to EPS dilution. Yield offered by the company is below its competitors' average of 5.1%.

Vanden High School football wins big at West

When you play that well in the first half, maybe you don't need to touch the ball much in the second.

Vanden High School's football team rolled up a big lead on Thursday night, then relied on its defense to preserve a 34-17 victory at West of Tracy.

Sophomore quarterback Jaden Brisendine threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the Vikings cruised to a 20-3 lead.

Vanden ran just three offensive plays in the third quarter, and fumbled on two of them, as West mounted a comeback. But Dre Aguiar intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to keep the Wolf Pack at bay.

"Our defense really played stout ... they just played a lot in the second half, and we gave them the ball a few times," Vanden head coach LeVon Haynes said. "We were able to stop their run for the most part, but we still have to cut down on our turnovers."

Ren Littlepage completed the scoring with a 71-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Littlepage also caught one of Brisendine's two scoring passes in the first period. The sophomore also hit Brandon Davis with a TD toss, and added a scoring strike to Dion Williams in the second quarter.

The Vikings also received solid defensive play from linemen John Stevenson and Kenny Brand, along with linebacker Elijah Williams.

Vanden improved to 2-1 overall. The Vikings travel to Napa next week.

(AP) ? Prince Harry is finishing his first phase of initial training at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

The 27-year-old Army captain arrived in Afghanistan for his second tour there on Friday but will not start flying Apache helicopter missions for at least seven more days.

On Sunday, the third-in-line to the British throne was expected to complete his two-day course in first aid, shooting, and roadside-bomb awareness.

He then is to start Apache-specific preparation Monday, where he will begin to familiarize himself with the helicopter's configurations for Afghanistan.

The prince's previous posting as a battlefield air traffic controller in Afghanistan in late 2007 and early 2008 lasted only 10 weeks. It was cut short amid fears for his safety after his deployment was made public.
