Vanden High School's football team rolled up a big lead on Thursday night, then relied on its defense to preserve a 34-17 victory at West of Tracy.
Sophomore quarterback Jaden Brisendine threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the Vikings cruised to a 20-3 lead.
Vanden ran just three offensive plays in the third quarter, and fumbled on two of them, as West mounted a comeback. But Dre Aguiar intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to keep the Wolf Pack at bay.
"Our defense really played stout ... they just played a lot in the second half, and we gave them the ball a few times," Vanden head coach LeVon Haynes said. "We were able to stop their run for the most part, but we still have to cut down on our turnovers."
Ren Littlepage completed the scoring with a 71-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
Littlepage also caught one of Brisendine's two scoring passes in the first period. The sophomore also hit Brandon Davis with a TD toss, and added a scoring strike to Dion Williams in the second quarter.
The Vikings also received solid defensive play from linemen John Stevenson and Kenny Brand, along with linebacker Elijah Williams.
Vanden improved to 2-1 overall. The Vikings travel to Napa next week.
